my mates put well over 5000 shots through his hmr iv done atleast 2000 through mine all we use is an old tooth brush and a bore snake they both still shooting perfectly.......

when you buy a match barrell.....vanhuxon or somthing that sounds like that they say not to use a rod on them but only a bore snake........

Cleaning any and all guns and barrels is important but different for many, and everyone will have their own take on it.

In the case of the .17HMR you have a small hole and some quite fast projectiles which tend to have a copper coat. This will leave a copper and propellent residue in the barrel and around the breech/bolt area. To maintain a good barrel, prolong its life and keep it accurate you will need to clean it.

A bore snake will not do this by itself, they were only ever designed as a "quick fix" out in the field until you can do the job properly (and if my memory serves me correctly for shotguns originally, which is a much simpler cleaning problem). Scrubbing with assorted cleaners, then gun oil to finish is the established way, however, in the case of some specialist barrels and barrels with "Fine" rifling scrubbing is not recommended. In this situation something like the bore foam or copper solvent should be used.

Many people will say I have never cleaned my barrel and it is perfect; if it is firing anything quite fast and copper coated and you get a chance to look at it with a bore scope you will agree you are wrong. If you think you and the gun are shooting well now, clean it and you will shoot better!

Please also note you can overdue the cleaning, there is no need to clean too vigorously or too frequently, let the chemicals do their job and only clean as required.

Happy shooting!

PS...Don't forget the stock and keep those lenses clean on the scope!
