FOXHUNTER 5,021
Popped out yesterday afternoon for a recce to see what bucks were about in preparation for April. I bumped a doe which was laid up at the back of a hedge and continued to see nothing else except pheasants and hares. On my return route I spotted another doe couched and decided to get closer, as I approached I spotted a 6 point buck in velvet with a couple of does. Another young doe appeared and the eldest doe proceeded to chase this one off head butting it a few times. Consequently they ended up in the next field and the stalk was on. I had to crawl around the buck to get to the does but they were skylined. So it was a waiting game to see if they would get any closer. Just as the light was fading another 2 does joined the party. I picked out the yearling and once broadside shot at around 70 yds .I couldn't see any shot reaction and watched the 2 does run off. Surely I hadn't missed ? I proceeded to look for it but it was dark by now and I couldn't find it. Fast forward to this morning and I went to look for it with the dog. No blood trail at all, after searching the nearby rushes I eventually found it about 150 yds from the shot site. The shot was perfect. I've had runners before obviously but this was quite unbelievable. This unalerted yearling doe had taken a 100 grainer .243 perfectly and had managed to run 150 yds with no blood trail. 3 Quote Link to post

I was amazed too expecting it to be poleaxed. Couldn't believe it ran so far , maybe 20 or 30 yds but not 150. It's not like it was liver shot or far back but perfect. I actually spotted it lying on the edge of some rushes as the dog was working through them. 1 Quote Link to post

I have shot roe before on 3 occasions with a perfect shot where the animal just stood there as if to say " is that your best shot " 1 Quote Link to post
