Danny123 1
Last year for the first time i used a vasectomised hob over 2 of my jills. The result was not what i expected. One jill came out of season, then seemed to come back into season at a later date, the other jill had a litter of kits. I was later told that this somtimes happens especially a few years after the operation, due to the 'snip' re-connecting. Would appreciate thoughts and experiences with vasectomised hobs, and what people do about jills in season-and why? Thanks Danny. Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,196
I am also interested. Quote Link to post
stubby 175
wouldent have thought it could re-connect, they dont tie a knot in the sperm tube, but snip a bit out, therefore connecting back i cant see possible, but maybe only firing on one tube, giving you the 50/50 when i had mine snipped 2 hobs £102, they wanted to charge me another £102 to send the "snipped" bits off to the lab, to check that the correct bits had been snipped out, its all very small in there, they would then have given me a 100% that it was done, i asked the vet/surgen how many ferts he had done, got the reply of 100's, so left it at that, keep me fingers crossed that it worked Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
It can & does reverse , i am sure Molly had the same hob vasectomised twice for it to still impregnate the jills who were covered by the hob Quote Link to post

Its £51 per hob is it? Quote Link to post

Its £51 per hob is it? yup, they quoted me £51 for the snip each, plus another £51 each for sending the bits off, I complained and they said it was down to me, if i just paid for the snip, without sending of the bits to the lab, but then they could'ent garentee it was 100% complete, thats why i asked to speak to the vet/surgeon to see how many times he had done this on ferrets, after his reply, thought it was a good enough gamble to leave the lab results and save the £102 Ill be using them both, to cover different jills this season, fingers crossed they will be firing blanks, if not, then Ill have a few more ferts Quote Link to post
sue 1
ive had 4 ferrets who have had the snip over the years all was successful ,none have ever reconnected .i used to wait 8 weeks after the op and just put him in with one jill just to make sure he was firing blanks.all i can say you didnt wait long enough or the op wasnt sucessful Quote Link to post
stubby 175
yup, my vet has said that finding the correct tubes to cut, is very difficult in such a small animal, compared to cat or dogs, maybe vets that do the snip on ferts, but havent done many, or even none, are missing the correct tubes, I know some may say that they have put a snipped hob with 2 jills, resulting in 1 litter, and 1 no show, that to me would say the snip was not a success, not that they had re-connected Quote Link to post
ShaggyRS6 0
I was quoted £93 per snip Quote Link to post
lorelei0922 2
makes one think.. what are they cutting if not the VasDefrens ??? Quote Link to post
Guest Bigbob
The only thing is after the snip you have to wait a given time 2 months or so to get rid of all the sperm in the hobs system ,You probably didn't wait long enough so he caught the first jill and had no live tadpoles for the other jill .But it wouldn't be the first time iv'e heard of a vet needing two go to snip a hob Quote Link to post
Danny123 1
The hob was at least 6 years old and was vasectomised at around 2 years old. I was told that the vets take away a small amount of the tube away in vasectomy because if they took away a large section it would result in the equivelent of a castration therefore no sex drive. The reason i started this post was because next week im having 2 jills speyed and have never had any speyed before, so wondered how others deal with their jills. It seems that if you are to have a hob vasectomised your spending alot of money and crossing your fingers each time hes in with a jill. Quote Link to post
FUBAR 0
I had one of my hobs snipped last year Cost £35 he also offered me the option of having the material removed checked by a lab and then said I'll do it , He got out a microscope and prepared 2 slides and found sperm on both slides saved me £15 so I bought him a pint. so anybody in North Shropshire or South Cheshire I can recomend Steve Leonard as a suitable vet [Whitchurch]. Your right its a lot to fork out if its not worked, personally if you only have a couple of jills i would spay if your never going to breed in the future Quote Link to post
Guest Bigbob
Last time i got it done the hob got 4 of my jills pregnant the vet said you can put a card in the window it's normally a £1 a week but you can do it for free till you get rid of the kitts .This time if they dont do it right im planning to put the kitts in a cardboard box and give them to the vets for free Quote Link to post
