Fallow cull today .

Recommended Posts

I get an annual invite to a cull day on a local estate that I look forward to every year .

Im on my quad checking all the small woods and outlying patches for fallow groups .I shoot whatever I want including muntjac and roe if I see fit .

Im not bothered about roe as I have them myself on perm but fallow are a rarity for me .

First up was a pricket from a group of mature bucks .I shot it in a patch of fenced off rushes and there was no way I was going to lift it over so I dragged it under with the front winch .

After taking that to the drop off point I went to wood that they seem to congregate in on cull days .Didn’t get there as one of the seated rifles said there was a group of does over by the wood edge and could try turn them his way as he’d not had any shooting .

Ill do my best says I but knew exactly the outcome .They saw the bike and started bunching up .Fallow act like wildebeasts on the Serengeti when faced with a carnivore .The outer one’s doing their best to get in the middle and this I what they did .No flight at all .

I pulled up ,got the rifle out the rack and waited til a doe presented a clean broadside shot .At 200 m it was off bipod and dropped a doe that broke away nicely .She was huge ,heavily pregnant and bloody heavy to get on the bike rack .I also noticed a lump on her back that wasn’t evident when I lined her up .

The rest went towards the seat ,veered off and jumped a fence to go off piste next door ?

Onwards after taking that to the gralloch station .Into a rushy area now with a ride cut through it like a mown lawn .Opposite is a swath of clearfell and I wondered if any deer would funnel down that if I waited .Didn’t even have chance to set up sticks and a bunch were  on me from the right .Shot a doe through the  neck free hand at about 20m then another off the bike seat at about 50 in the neck too .

Struggled to get the large doe on the bike as I pulled my shoulder on the last doe but managed eventually .

Virtually sat on the large doe as she was massive .

Left the 3 here for the collection team as the radio was telling me deer were on the boundary .
The place I was directed too borders a village so a bit of discrete riding was in order to get between the deer and village to lose the sound of any shots .Not that it’s a problem more political really .
A group of mature bucks were in a copse with a stream running through it and I could make out several prickets amongst them .They wernt in the least bothered by the bike and allowed me to get within 120m .Off the front of the bike I shot a large pricket in the chest which fell on the spot luckily as I didn’t want it in the stream .
Before I got to extract it a muntie buck trotted out of cover as if nothing happened and I shot it through the chest at about 140 .My size of deer to handle ???
