Price increase this month.

I just had an email from 'Just Cartridges' stating that all cartridge prices will rise this month so I assume, rightly or wrongly, that rifle ammo will do the same as the blame is placed on component cost which to my mind must also apply to rimfire and centrefire loads.  Might be worth getting a few into your stock.

Inevitable although the prices have gone up ridiculously anyway in the laset few years. I used to buy Gamebore White Gold for £4 a box or £129 a 1,000 case, and now they're  £9.10 or £304 a 1,000.

It is pretty severe to the point that many clay shooters will stop shooting competition because you are looking at £100 total cost of a 100 bird sporting when you consider travel, food. entry and cartridges. I am seriously thinking of looking at reloading again after many years of factory loads but with my wife and myself shooting and plenty of time to make the cartridges, it may now be viable again.

One thing is for certain, I will be having a deep conversation with 'Clay & Game', the reloading specialists , at the Northern Shooting show.

I honestly doubt reloading today will save much Phil. It was viable in the 90's but powder and primers today are very expensive. A decent machine is expensive. The cheap machines seem to always have issues.

 

I think it's time you switched to muzzloaders Phil, it's the only viable option today

Mate of mine runs a pigeon shooting business that operates for three months of the year the rest of the year is spent doing accompanied stalking, mainly client's from abroad. They only shoot steel shot as the pigeon's are sold into the pet trade. He has just ordered his cartridges for this year and they are £400 a thousand and he has ordered £30,000 worth. I told him i can remember buying the same companies budget cartridges when the first started selling them for £86 a thousand, by the time i packed it in they had risen to £130 a thousand in a matter of about 3 years.

When I cast my mind back many years ago, I used to buy Eley half cartridges at £12 per 1000, I know......what the hell are half carts, well a certain dealer used to buy these boxes from Eley which contained 1000 cartridges chopped off close to the top so all the lead was removed, leaving the powder and primers and in many cases the plaswad was in tact as well.  My pals who also reloaded bought the boxes from me at no extra cost and I had a friend who owned a scrapyard, now this was another bonus as he quite often got a few ton of lead shot which may have been 4,5,6,7,8,9 shot and guess who got the first offer on the little sacks.....................correct, I would collect them with my rear suspension down on the floor take them home, pick which I wanted and shared the rest with my pals.  OH THE GOOD OLD DAYS.

I sold two muzzloaders to someone in summer that was in a clay shoot for muzzloaders. He said it was getting more popular.

I cleared a shop basement out of flood damaged cartridges. Had thousands for nowt.

That lasted years, salvaged shot wads and powder.

Mean while back on planet earth the cost is irrelevant if your life  revolves around it .Those that give up because of cost were always  culls anyway .

Idk about reloading, did a test a while back with a new rifle. By the time I went through enough ammo ( just 20rd boxes) to find something that shit the way I wanted I could have bought dies, powder , and bullets  and had been working up my own loads ( which I have to say always seem to shoot better then factory, possibly because I buy real budget guns but still)

But it's all relevant to what you do. I tell guys all the time.  If you only shoot 20-40rd a year and your not a perfectionist / tinkerer don't wast your time with reloading.

I used to do 2 rounds (80 clays) for £35, including 40 clays and 100 cartidges 20yrs back.

To an extent. It just depends on how much spare cash you have. Not everyone can simply afford them irresective because it's what matters to them. Try telling the wife you're weekend clay shoot is more important than her heating or eating all week, and see how long the marriage lasts!

Even a cheeky bunch of flowers isn't going to save that one.

For now, wait until after the wedding
