South hams hunter 8,926
On my way to the mark and get a video message off mills; 'one on the board Johnny boy'. Got there and literally as I'm walking down I here 'hurry up then, you can land this one'. I hadn't even took my rods out the sleeves and Mills already had 2. I wish I could go into detail about what happened next but the next few hours where a blur, all rolled into one. The fish literally came thick and fast for the few hours we fished. I decided to use my old faithful 2ft pulley with 3/0 chinus for both bottom and pennel hook and Mills was using a combination of pulleys and up 'n' overs with 3/0 avenjas with a chinu pennel. If memory serves me right Mills was on 3 rays before I had my first and then the whiting showed up! Several times neither of us had a rod in the water as we we're battling through the bites; whiting after whiting fell to both sandeel and the sandeel/squid cocktail. Every now and then we would get a slightly different bite; be it a proper pull down or a slack line and as soon as we saw this we knew there was another smalleye on the end of it. We tried a few other baits to see if they'd last slightly longer to give the rays chance to find them and Mills actually had a smalleye on a Sardine head. I put a prawn in close and had a mental pull down and one hell of a scrap of a fish; nothing fights better than a ray hooked by the tail. I also got cut by the spines on a male smalleye and the blood just would not stop, there was blood everywhere. It was honestly bedlam, we had a few doggies thrown in aswell. At the end of the session we'd had about 50 whiting, 10 dogs and 12 smalleyes between us in just over 4 hours. Definitely a session too remember. 7 Quote Link to post
