Lurchers Marking

Recommended Posts

Most of these pics are of dogs ferreting? nets down etc!! I would not call that a mark as such?

Surely its when you are walking and the dog finds on its own, stands stares, wags tail, what ever, that is marking.....

Crouching waiting for a bolt is not marking, most dogs will do this when they here a rumble underground!! Its looks the same but is different? maybe? :D

Do your dogs have differnt marks for differing quarry?

The marking technique differs from dog to dog. I've had whippet types that would pace about a bury letting out a low whimper to a lurcher to lucher bitch that would attempt to dig them out (not the ideal situation) when she found them at home.

The two Beardie crosses I've had differed greatly in their marking technique. Shannon my old bitch would fix the entrance with an intense stare, her body going completely ridged until I acknowledged her mark. Where as Aura will tiptoe over a warren carefully pocking her muzzle into the inhabited holes.

The key is to put the time in, let your dog have it's head and study how it goes about it's job. As I said each dog is different it may take a little time to understand your dog or it might well be completely obvious, you just have to get out there and do it. While your pup learns, so do you.

Spot on Reload.

For me, your dog has to mark before the nets go down. I hate waisting time netting up for nothing. Surely thats one of the main reasons we take lurchers ferreting with us. It's not only to catch those rabbits that slip the nets or bolt from missed holes.

Aura's mark for inhabited burys is different to the mark she gives for those rabbits she finds above ground. She lowers her front end in readiness to accelarate, her body stiffens and her eyes widen as she stares intently at the spot where the bunnie is hiding, as ilastaited in the pics below.

I knew the last two were fox although i didnt bolt them, because of the whining my old dog makes when charlie is at home and these holes have held a few over the years,he never whines when he marks rabbits, always mute but with a fox he will eventually try and dig in to it if left to his own devices and always looks more serious about who's at home

Exactly my Thinking TJ..........!

My dog marks occupied buries a certain way........and takes a completely different stance when expecting a bolt when the nets are down. ;)

My bitch gives a steady mark on the rabbits...but that's come over time. When she was a youngster I had to watch her round the buries and everything I thought was a mark was honoured with a ferret in. We both learned from each

other and I gained confidence in her once I had understood how she was marking.

It wasn't long before I was reading correctly and with that she knew the ferret

would go in. She turned into a very reliable marker.

She was a pain in the arse with foxes though
