First lurchers

Recommended Posts

I love all these old photos. They take me back to another time.It all seemed a lot easier then. Buy your lurcher pups from ads in exchange and mart. Plenty of rabbits and hares and mostly not as much bother as these days.

Sorry about the whippet being shot though Charts. Must've been gutted.

Sorting through my mums house we came across pictures of my first lurcher, 1979 so I gave the pup an of the era name "toyah" ?. We had terriers and ferrets but this bitch was a game changer for moochi

First rabbit me and my mate ever caught on the lamp. We were about 14 and allowed to take his old mans dog out by ourselves. We used to walk miles. I still know the exact spot we caught it. We thought

Double bred Bilko dog, equally at home on track or field. Sadly shot by a 'keeper when running a hare;

Bitch sired by Bilko, out of a Greyhound bitch. Fastest I've ever seen on a track and up to a hare,

Both early 70's.

Cheers.

This was my first coursing bred dog about 24 years ago, he was out January jack, look how straight his back legs are I don’t like them like that probably why he was so slow, I like a good bit of angulation on the back legs I think I gives speed and power, look at a hares back legs there nearly folded in half most time I’m sure that’s why a hare is so fast for its size it all about leverage

I agree, this one I owned had straight back legs and no "spring" in the hocks.

This little Beddy type of mine had a nice stance, plenty of "spring" in the back end,

Yea I do like to see a good shape to the back legs it definitely has an affect on speed, I also think the way a saluki runs keeping a generally flat back when at speed is another point which gives them greater stamina because there not using loads of energy from there back muscles like a whippet or greyhound does as they flex there back a lot when sprinting which gives them extra speed but tires them out quicker

I have posted pictures before of my first proper lurcher a great dog who never suffered injuries despite my silliness of running him on hard ground and daunting places I lost him at nearly 7 years old after he disappeared on the Wentworth Estate running an hare into woodland never to be seen again.

To be honest, my brother wanted to breed bulls, I wanted to breed bull/greyhounds, but the bitch was knocked down chasing a collie down the Newcastle coast road, so that ended that particular discussion !

Cheers.

Did you ever see January jack run ?

No I was a bit younger and only met him occasionally till he was a bit older, good dog man, think we only walked out once or twice.

Cheers, D.
