paulus 26
I was reading a piece the other night that was saying the Grass Snake population is in serious decline, I was thinking about this and i don't think this is the complete story, whilst i don't see them generally as much as i did years ago, i know of places were its positively alive with them at the right time of year and the right time of day. The garden of my house has quite a few, had the plastic engine cover off the bottom of my boys polo engine about 10 years ago chucked it up on the front lawn while I fixed the car a few days later there was a couple of slow worms under it so it never went back on, still there now and in the summer there is always 5/6 underneath it,

I was out with the dogs in a wood a few years back on the outskirts of Bristol, come into a clearing were the sun was beating down saw a big old grass snake curled up on a big tussock of grass sunbathing, went to grab it but it shot of into the grass a little pursuit with me on my hands and knees chasing this snake when the fecker stops and I realised it was the biggest adder I’d seen in my life, I grabbed the dogs and bid him farewell, have caught some pretty big grass snakes but be warned they spray you like a skunk f***ing stinks and won’t come off for ages 1

Arry 23,446
Don't see many Grass snakes any more. Last one I saw was when I was mullet fishing up the river and one came swimming by. But Slow worms I have a heathy population in a old compost heap that I don't disturb any more just top it up a bit with hedge cuttings and grass and covered with bit of felt. Just get a meter square of mineral felt, lay on the grass in the sun and leave it a few days
