A couple of seasons back, one of the Man U defenders accidentally trod on his goalkeeper's toe ( De Gea) . He went down screaming in agony and the opposition scored from a totally open goal. The worst thing was nobody criticised De Gea. They all criticised the ref instead for not blowing up. As Victor Meldrew says. Unbelievable!

Funny enough I was having that conversation this morning with my boy telling him how forwards used to have to be every bit as tough, brave and physical as any centre back. The conversation has been done to death a bit on here but I still remember if the keeper didn’t have two hands on the ball you could bury it, challenge the keeper at corners etc….now all players are (over ?) protected and I think there are good and bad sides to that. For young players like my lad who has just started his adult football career (15 turning 16) I don’t think I’d want to see him getting smashed by some absolute donkey of a back or midfielder…..I remember how old boys treated me and my pals when we were young and they would really try and hurt you. At the same time, the physical battle is a massive part of the game and one you have to learn by way of combat so it’s a hard one ?

Lol Yeah but getting smashed every 10 yards abd getting up to run yards for another roll around... fit as f**k those blokes tbf... I've enjoyed a few of the world cup games, the France V South Africa game on Sunday was what sport is about imo

Said exactly the same at the local football on Saturday, its a good standard, young pros on loan or ex pros finishing there career... but... its very technical and nice football etc, but none of the grit and getting smashed about like our time, I played this standard and you had to b fit and strong, dont get me wrong you had to have all the basic skills needed to play but if you werebt fit and strong you couldn't play it... now its far more technical, some very very good football, I really enjoyed it, but not that getting off your seat and screaming at the big challenges, getting stuck in malarkey!! Lol

Infuriates me mate... the thought of the magic bucket and sponge coming on and your opposite number thinking he'd hurt you made you get up straight away and do the run-hop-run-hop dance, which was famous for any self respecting football "hard man"...lol Edited October 18, 2023 by NEWKID 1

However, all this age old “toughness” business is a bit like comparing apples and onions isn’t it mate……there’s plenty of ways a sportsman can be tough that don’t involve them having a ten minute break because they got a split eye lid. Id say where rugby is robust then football is relentless ?…..you ain’t stopping every 5 minutes for a breather, you have to take your hit and keep going. We know what modern top level football is and why but down at local level football is every bit as gritty as it ever was. Local rugby used to be for the fat slow blokes and football was for everyone else. ! Lol ……that’s a bit unkind but I do like giving the egg chasers a poke ! chartpolski 23,538
I think what Ray was getting at, and I agree with him, is that rugby players don’t roll around the floor , feigning injury and trying to get the opposing player sent off . None of this waving imaginary cards around, and I’m glad the refs are clamping down on it. I couldn’t believe Almiron doing it against West Ham and HIM getting the card, really stupid, but intelligence has never been a prerequisite to being a good footballer ! If a footballer had been hit with a tackle like the Argie did to the taff to save the game, he would have been in intensive care for a month ! But, two completely different games and very enjoyable to watch ! Cheers.

Battistuta asked his doctor to cut his legs off after he retired because he was in constant pain from all the damage they took…….I bet Will Carling never asked his doctor to do that ! Lol Had to add this: Rugby players may be tough but they will never be please cut my legs off tough ! Lol Edited October 18, 2023 by WILF
chartpolski 23,538
As I said, two completely different games, but 25 years ago rugby players didn’t have the laws protecting them they do these days.; high tackle , head contact, etc banned and punished severely, as has been seen in this World Cup, players being sent off for head contact when the fref and TMO have taken ages to make a decision on what looked like a 50/50 but the decision always goes against the player without the ball. Its pointless comparing rugby to soccer. Cheers. 1

Conning the ref remains one of the few true human elements in the game and should really be absorbed through VAR At the upper elechelon at the game , you have to wring every advantage out at your disposal to win as simply , and quite sadly , there’s just too much money at stake . Honour and pride goes out the window then .

chartpolski 23,538
My five year old great nephew is mad about football and rugby; his dad is right into football and his grandad is Chairman of Newcastle Gosforth Rugby Club; He played in his first competitive game of Touch Rugby last week and scored two tries, doing completely unnecessary flamboyant dives over the try line, but he was warned twice for tackling the opposition AND his own players ! LOL ! His grandad described him as a baby rhinoceros running amok ! Cheers.
