If you make light of something thats potentially hurtful by adopting the word yourself it takes the sting out of it when others call you it in a derogatory sense. Clever huh? I knew about 4 white people the whole time I lived there. I was scared shitless as I had come from out in the hills to the "ghetto" :11: and had never seen a black person except on TV. I had this stereotypical image of black guys hanging around waiting to mug people etc. I never got one bit of trouble while I was there. Everyone was really friendly and nice towards me, I never got one nasty look or any racist abuse from anyone. I felt as though I stuck out like a sore thumb being white, but no one seemed to notice. The Pakistani man in the corner shop was great, he let me buy drink even though I was underage :11: and my boss's son and duaghter, (both half cast) took me under their wing and showed me around etc. It was a life changing experience for me. I learned very quickly that white people are the real B*****S and that I felt ashamed of my colour for the first time in my life! Its dead easy to go along with the crowd and say racist stuff, after all everyone does it so it must be ok yeah? One question though, how would YOU feel if you woke up one morning and you were coloured? How would you cope with it? How would you feel on the other side of the fence? Think about it lads cos your skin is only your skin, it doesnt make you the person you are underneath. There are pratts in every colour, black, yellow, brown and white. Guest CharlieC Posted November 9, 2005 Report Share Posted November 9, 2005 Ha ha very funny :11: What I meant is that from the experience I had, I went down there expecting coloured people to give me a hard time for being the "odd one out" and they didnt, but how often do white people give coloured folk a hard time just because of their colour? Thats the point I was trying to make. Thats why I dont judge people by their colour, I judge them by their personality, and theres good and bad in all walks of life. I'm not taking the p*ss just offering food for thought, Someone who is Ginger or disabled might offer the same argument but I bet they wont be as well protected as a consequence. I work for a charity and our head office is in Kentish town 90% of the staff are non white and sound as a pound.
