All the ones that I have been around, seem to have a prepencity for guarding your home, Kids, possesions etc,...and nobody can complain about that However,..their Dingo ancestory does appear to make them incredably suspicious, as regards, strange dogs, that approach you when out and about.. I have always practiced early (and extensive) socialisation with young dogs, but a few are hell bent on warning off canines that are not in their pack.. It can get emotional.. Personally,..I feel that these unique working stockdogs are not suitable for the average family companion dog,...they really do need an outlet for their amazing capacity to seek out, and look for fun and games...and their concept of sport and craic is rarely satisfied by a wee mouch out,...this only ever seems to fire them up.. They really do like a regular regime of exciting activity,..or some examples, become a nuicence. I will leave it there,...Ive been writing on this subject since 1986, and in truth, I am just about all dogged out Loads of info 'out there',...and I would advice folk to read everything they can, on the fabulous and unique Oz Heeler, and then make up their own minds,.. as to whether they really need such a critter.. Obviously the various miscellany of hybrid lurcher composites , created from these animals is amazingly varied,.. in size, type, ability, etc.. Totally different subject... All the best,..and a Happy , safe and prosperous New Year. Edited January 9, 2023 by OldPhil 13 2 Quote Link to post

Ive kept a pure bred,..but never again Mind you, some of the hybrids can be a tad sharp as well.... I rember going out years ago with Howell and Jake think Jake was half cross fill am I right . My bitch was right at the back of the van hiding from it and Jake had his head between the seats of the van. I was too scared to look over my shoulder as he was so protective of Howell! If I remember right I think he would attack people on command as well 1 Quote Link to post

I did read that lot get used by the trades people for guarding tools and pickup truck . They still use them, mostly on hard cattle but kelpies or crosses of the two are used mostly for stock work. They are the best dog for guarding your truck hands down. 2 Quote Link to post
Aussie Whip 4,101
What worries me is their burst in popularity with a cartoon called Bluey. People are breeding them everywhere over here as pets and some are just that now. Every kid wants one and the original temperament is getting lost or the good ones end up in pounds being too full on for most families. 2 Quote Link to post

northern lad 2,292
My son in law got a kelpie about 18 month ago..totally wrong dog for him but he wouldn't listen..it can't be left on its own in the house for 10 mins without it destroying the place..suspicious of everybody as others have said and its guarding is through the roof...they had to prize it off his mates arm one night as the dickhead jumped out from behind a hedge...For the last 6 months the dog has been losing weight, constant upset stomach no matter what food its on,after spending a couple of grand on scans, bloods, shit samples etc etc it turns out the dog is allergic to protein..never heard of this before..its now on a really low protein science diet and seems well..apparently its not uncommon in kelpie, anyone else shed any light on this?
