neil r 1,844
Tried this pond this morning with the Korum glide and centerpin on the lift method and waggler further out with this 1969 Abu 505 and spliced tip daiwa matchlite from the late 80’s-early 90’s . Bite a chuck of skimmers , roach , perch and a snig on maggot . Went in the margins with the pin and had tench , big skimmers and decent roach on corn and pellet 7 Quote Link to post

comanche 2,942
I'm not big on fishing in the old closed season but succumbed to the farm pond last night . It's nine feet deep and cold so the tench in it won't start spawning for a few weeks anyway . I slung some groundbait into a swim then wandered off to check the sheep and walk the dog before returning to the pond with my rod . The groundbait had attracted more than fish.Their cuteness rating dropped a bit when they started to show an annoying interest in my float .Sharing their evening meal with a bunch of goosey gate-crashers didn't seem to bother the smaller members of the ocal fish population . Pretty much every piece of bread or grain of corn came back replaced by a rudd. What l really wanted though was one of the green things that were throwing up bubbles all over the swim . Heavier shotting took the bait through the rudd to rest on the bottom. Where it sat untouched! Corn and bread were seemingly out of favour with the tench so l spuddled under a log for a worm. This proved a good move . It was only a few minutes later that the float wavered and rose to half cock before sliding away . I struck into something pleasingly muscular . It stayed deep , making a series of short fast runs punctuated by acrobatic twists and turns . Luckily l had a long rod for the only time the fish left the deep water was to head for the reed beds or overhanging vegetation. Several times l thought about reaching for the net but thinking about it was as far as it went. For each time the fish, which l still hadn't seen, went back to its underwater contortions. Eventually it was mine . No monster as far as its species go but a rare success for me and a good fish for the farm pond . Not the biggest l've caught from there but certainly the trickiest to land . It was apparent why when l realised that it was a male ; the only male tench l've ever caught from this water ! It seems unlikely that he is the only male in the pond but there can't be many of them . They're going to have their work cut out with the ladies soon so l'll leave them in peace for a couple of months. Edited May 29, 2023 by comanche 10 1 Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
My patience with Canada Geese expired many years ago, they have taken over so much of the UK waters they are an absolute pain, not to mention the fact, I'm sure more comes out of their back end than they actually eat!!! 1 Quote Link to post

Yes. This lot appeared from nowhere . I think they must've walked across the fields . I successfully "relocated" a pair early in the year .....They didn't go to waste . The other one made a good meal thanks to tips from a customer who is a chef . 6 Quote Link to post

Yes, l was given strict instructions to slice it into 3/4inch thick steaks and score it part way through in a diamond pattern. Then brine it with a couple of rinses and fresh brine changes for 48 hours . It worked. I remember years ago trying to roast one like a domestic goose. It tasted like what l imagine silage tastes like. Even the dogs wouldn't touch it Edited May 31, 2023 by comanche Quote Link to post
