My first shotgun

Recommended Posts

depends on your budget and your intended use.

but a beretta 686 silver pigeon would be my choice if i could stretch to it. 12 bore, 28 inch multi choke barrels, and have the stock adjusted to fit. £1500/1800 new would have you a gun that fits and will last your lifetime.

Max half choke or exchangable choke to be able to use steel shot are a must to be able to use the shotgun in the future. A cheap new gun or a quality used one ~1000£ would get you in to the game so you know exactly what you want when/if you want to upgrade it later.

What’s your budget Denboy ? I would buy a secondhand Beretta 686 or Browning B325 or B425 , or Miroku MK38 , Mk60 or Mk70 . If you are of average build and height then you could pick up anyone of these standard stock size guns and get on with it . The Beretta is bombproof and doesn’t need a lot of maintenance, the Brownings like to be kept oiled . You could have any one of these guns and take if anywhere, shoot game or clays and not want to upgrade . And if  you fall out of love with shooting , you can re sell it and not lose any money.
The only warning I would say is that if we lose lead in the future, you might want to think about a gun that is proofed for steel . But then a lot of us are going to be in that position, including me .
