Guest SJM
At our hunt terrier/lurcher show we had people from far and wide to enter their dogs. Luckily we had to good welsh lads judging and it was always the working terriers being placed in the top 3. It was nice seeing the showers faces when they didnt win anything, most of them wouldnt even put their dogs into the races at the end of the afternoon. Now Im not into shows, but I would have liked to have seen that Nothing better than seeing the superficial show ponies taken down a peg or two when the workers win, and rightly so A showring is no place to judge a dog, at least not a working dog anwyay Quote Link to post
i am the undertaker 1
yes thats what i am saying scotty its a shame more people who work their terriers dont show them because there are a lot of smart dogs out there that work then perhaps a few more owners that only show there dogs would be knocked off there perch Quote Link to post

Guest little lurcher
yes totally agree with i am the undertaker there arnt enough working dogs being shown its a shame because there are some cracking dogs that are brilliant workers i have to agree with this thread although im not a terrier person im a whippet and lurcher girl, my whippets are worked and they also show, the problem i have is my whippets are well muscled up to do a day and/or nights work, i then get put down in the ring for my dogs muscle???!!!!! wtf!!!! i was told b1 judge , "i really wanted to give you first but your bitch is far too muscly for showing , you need to stop training her so hard"!!!!! i was livid, these dogs are bred to do a job as well as look good and true to type but with those sorts of attitudes what hope does any breed have !!!! the nails are supposed to be cut right back too , well how the hell will the dog grip on a turn???!!! even been asked what spray have i put on the coats to make them so shiny as they are kennel dogs, ermmmmmmmmmm correct feeding and exercise????!!! sorry rant over Quote Link to post

i am the undertaker 1
totally agree with topper i do a fair bit of judging and the worker will get 1st every time if it warrants it i have judged shows where a dog looks really smart but have no muscle tone and feel like a bag of jelly when handled Quote Link to post

Pyxel 0
I know someone who despises showing and hates the stuck up show types who maybe keep 20 odd dogs or so in a block of kennels and does little else but feed them and let them out for a piss 2 or 3 times a day and breed a few just to conform to a daft breed standard, get excited about the shape of a dog's nostril, bob about a show ring for a little while, then find out what a person thinks of your dog and win a rosette. I'd get much more satisfaction from my dog catching more rabbits than my mate's dog because at least then he is proving what a good dog he is - I don't have to be told by someone else what they think. It gets me how some show people look down on lads that might be out hours on end with their dogs working them and think that their show dog has a much better life doing nowt. I think the knackered working dog will be happier at the end of the day. Quote Link to post
Ricky-N.p.p 0
I know lots of lads who have genuine working terriers and show them in the summer months, some do better than others but the problems arrise when people start breading from show dogs that dont make the grade to ground....so its not a matter of what dogs but more a matter of who has them ! my honest opion rick Quote Link to post
