having had a look through the forums it amazes me why people feel you cant have dogs that show and work we have had dogs for 20 odd years and won lots of supreme championships but all of our dogs worked you dont just have to have one or the other if our dogs didnt work we wouldnt keep them but we also like the shows and like to win

That's a bold first post in this section my friend!

I used to show my dogs too but good decent hard workers always get marked and loose teeth and break jaws and get parts of their ears missing, and their nose gets pierced by some red fellow and their lower jaw gets chewed off by somebody else, and then they don't look like they used to except for me they look fine as the memories of all their work adds up. By the way, show is just nonsense anyway, especially FCI shows. Those people haven't a clue what a working terrier is, and we have no working terrier shows over here because there are very few working terriers and those who really work them don't care for shows...You wanna humiliate your loyal tyke by paying a sum of money to some pompous figure, for whom you display your little friend like market ware. Upon which this upper human being begins to paw your precious animal, also and especially in the private parts, and all that so as that person can claim his/her opinion about your dog???? And that while the same yahoo character has never seen that dog tackle a tusker boar or a fox? If that's your game....

i have had some fantastic working dogs and yes some of them have got marked and shown signs of work but they have still won shows i dont keep dogs that keep smashing into their prey so they dont get there jaws ripped off i agree that a lot of judges dont know a good working dog but a lot do and i just think people shouldnt put someone down for showing their dogs just because they dont like showing theirs

shows are ok,good place to meet up with different terriermen for a bit of crack, but thats it,a bit of fun is all it should be,not taken serious and deffinately not worth striving to breed or aquire "smart" type dogs to win! i enjoy them, never had anything smart enough to win anything, but still enjoy them.i now have a smart russell, but dont want to take him to any shows ,just incase i get the show bug!!! ha ha!! work, work work, its all that matters, shows are just to pass the summer!

I agree with dev there shows are becoming far to serous and are ment to be fun ect . Im not to botherd on them although the mrs loves them and drags me along  As long as the winners realise there dog is not the best dog there unless its proven the best in the field as looks count for nothing.

Id sooner have a worker than a looker, but then if you have a dog that looks smart and works well then whats the harm in having abit of fun at the shows with it. The terrier shows are always a good time to catch up with old friends and make new ones, and its something to do in the quiet summer months.

Handsome is as handsome does, shows should be treated as a bit of light hearted fun to meet up with pals and let the kids take the young dogs in the puppy class.

The trouble is, folk start to get rosette fever and then they breed to win rather than breed to work!!

I think what put most of the 'anti-show' boys off is the fact that most dog shows will have started off as a bit of fun, but it quite clearly got out of hand and distroyed more breeds than you can name, fox terriers, irish wolfhounds etc.............And is continuing to be detrimental to breeds, bedlingtons etc

You only have to read a few posts to see this is true and if we're honest it could happen to the workers of today.

I was reading the whippet yearbook and read an article (by Mike Brown, I think) about trying to acquire a working whippet, numerous knock backs off people who refused to sell him one as "their dogs dont do that sort of thing". Shamefull.

The other part about 'as long as the winner doesn't think his dog is the best' is probably what causes shows to take over a person. (my opinion only). Its human nature that if your dog wont work below ground, but will win shows, where you get loads of compliments, what will you do. Natural common sence, people want to be proud of their animal.

A question to 'I am the undertaker', if you acquired a good looking dog that started winning puppy shows and was clearly going to win you lot more shows, but then failed to make the grade and wouldn't go to ground. What would you do with the dog? And most importantly would you be able to refuse money when people wanted him to be a stud dog for his looks? if you could then you ar a true gentlemen.

Although I'm not a show attender and could be wrong, I'd put a large bet on the fact that most show winners are definitely not the dogs who can stay for hours on a hard dig, I'd love to be corrected on that, but not with one off examples of "my dog did this" more "all the dogs in this particular show are proper proven stayers". he sheer nature of working true working terriers suggests this.

People will definitely breed from show winners, simply because they have won! I'm sure no one on here will disagree with that.

Each to their own, horses for courses, we all have dogs for our own reasons and I applaud anyone who treasures their dogs as much as I do, however I feel it is our duty to protect the working starins of tomorrow. If people like showing dogs and workers, why dont you try to resurect an old working breed back to hits former hay day, and keep it a show winner, sealyham etc.........................good look anyone who tries.

At our hunt terrier/lurcher show we had people from far and wide to enter their dogs. Luckily we had to good welsh lads judging and it was always the working terriers being placed in the top 3. It was nice seeing the showers faces when they didnt win anything, most of them wouldnt even put their dogs into the races at the end of the afternoon.
