First attempts at long netting

I purchased my first longnet a while back off nightshadow and took a while to find some suitable posts,my first attempt was a field near me that has large amounts of rabbits out at night,so i decided to have a walk and try my luck,i kept tight to the hedge where i knew the burries were,and ran out the net then left the field to walk around the other side and hopefully lamp the rabbits toward the holes,flicked on the lamp to reveal several sets of ruby reds,a few ran in opposite direction but 2 decided to run for home,as they approached the net ( i was gettin ready for my first bag) they both jinked around the net.

 

Few days later after a heated discusion with her indoors i took my 2 ferrets and the longnet to a smallholding up the road,set the net and dropped the ferts in plenty of action but again they seemed to spot the net and either go back to ground or go through the hedge,had a few close calls but nothing until the last bury where the action was thick and fast 2 hitting the net at same time,so quickly dispatched them and stood back waiting again, wasnt waiting long another 3 found the net making my first ever longnet bag 5,put a big smile on my face well at least until i got home.

was abit disappointed not to get any but maybe next time.

Ghengis when setting your net along a hedge put a 90 deg. dog leg about 5 metres long at the end of your net if rabbits run along the net they get caught in it

johns advise is sound i allways bring the ends of net right around so as to form a 45 deg pointing to middle of net some bright nights 50% of rabbits

will be taken in these end stoppers which brings me to the point about flicking lamp over field any rabbits close to the net will see a wall of netting

illuminated in front of them not a good idea the best trigger responce to panic them into there headlong dash for cover is noise as you are aware

you can lamp rabbits at close range without them running but make a noise and there gone if your working the nets on your own or the rabbits are

reluctant to move walk briskly toward your net making lots of noise stamping your feet every now and helps if the field is large shaking a box of matches

also works one other point always try to drive rabbits down hill into nets and hares up hill

Well done mate, however, I'd leave the lamp at home after the reconnaissance session. Be like a ghost setting the net, and once you're walking them in , tap a net peg on your welly or rattle a box of matches. Cording, of banting as Harold Wyman calls it is best but you really need two people to drag the field in with a line. As someone mentioned you can tail the end of your net out, especially on lighter nights or when the rabbits are spooky. Good hunting ian.

Yes Tailing the net at 45 degrees stops rabbits that run along the length of the nets and you can miss a lot of rabbits if you dont do it in certain situations.

Also........never use a lamp when long netting at night.........it all wants doing in total darkness, that said a small torch in the pocket is useful for untangling and removing twigs from the nets after a successful drop.
