To much hard work need decent sized tanks , frequent water changes and smell. why don’t you get a tortoise ?  so long you get decent enclosure  so dogs can’t chomp it , if you get a horsefield

They are fine providing you clean them out like anything else .Stinking cages or tanks say more about the owner than the pet .

they stink like f**k and carry salmonella ?

If you do get him a terrapin take it out of the tank when feeding an put it in a bucket with a couple of inches of water with it's foodfor about 20 minutes or so till it eats and does it's business it saves the water in the tank getting as dirty but as said a tortoise is much better
