I have a russell bitch i have dug to the mother but not sire (Gould dog), she started at the end of last season when she was twelve months , easy dig to a fox that wouldnt bolt to the gun, she didnt get bit just bayed all the time, this season she went to a fox which again wouldnt bolt but got her collar stuck on roots in a tight place , the fox had hold of her back leg and it was a struggle to get her out, since then she has.only bayed for a few minutes tops then comes out, today in a very easy place she did the same she is now twenty months old, some say still young others say no good , what are your opinions?

In my honest opinion, the prognosis is not good. I would suggest that - if possible - you try her in an earth where she can be dug to or bolt a fox from quite quickly: Another option is to get her out on a dig with some experienced dogs and let her watch and go at her own pace.

Good luck,

when you say she comes out, does she stay out or goes back in?have you only dug to her twice or have i misread your post?not having a go mate just trying to understand the situation a bit better.
Everytime she has come out i have lifted up a net and shes gone back in but come back out if charlie has bossed her, twice i have dug to her the second time was when got stuck, although twenty months she acts puppyish, i am just hoping that with age she will gain a bit of confidence.

its your call,if you think she might eventually make it you could put her away till next season and try her then, hopefully she will have matured enough by then, try her a few times and if still no good, call time on her.i would get another puppy to rear in the meantime just incase she doesn't make it,at least you will have something esle to run on

Good shout, i think i will take her for the rest of season let her watch and rag, basically treat her as a pup again put her away and as you said try her a few times next season, hopefully shes a late developer.

Get shut :big_boss:

Why was the Fox on her back leg in the first place

The question you should ask yourself is, what are you going to do if / when this bitch does not improve ? :hmm:

Move on and get something that will do the business

Or..........................................take your time, clean it's sh*t up, feed the f*cking thing, make allowance's for it when it comes in season.................................................................. and all in the off chance it might not be a f*cking COWARD and keep it

Your choice matey but i think you already know the answer ;)

a mate of mine has a patterdale bitch that showed no interest in work at all,she had seen plenty of rats by the time she was 12 months and hadn't tried any of them, between 12 and 19 months she watched digs and still nothing! one day she clicked, now 21 months she has been dug 5 times,up and at it bossing her quarry,so there is hope for your pup yet

If she was still acting like a pup, she should probably have been treated as such...never send a boy to do a mans job!

But whats done is done now i guess...maybe take her out, and just stake her out at digs, dont let her have 'rag-ups' or anything like that, as that is a reward...no point in staking her out, then giving her a dead fox to rag, because you are reawarding her for not working hard for anything...if you wanted, give her all summer off, stake her out at a bunch of digs, and wait (which should have been done anyway) until she acts like a terrier and NOT a pup, then let her have another look...but the bitch will be going on 26+ months, and if a dog 'aint working how you want it to buy then, it NEVER will, so get rid, either spay her and get her a nice pet home (if you find her a pet home MAKE SURE SHE IS SPAYED!!!!) or cull her...not a pleaseant thing, but if the guy who bred her had done the same thing with the parents, its sounds like you may have had a decent little worker buy now mate...she may come good, but it sounds dodgy to me mate...good luck.

Kye,..

Thanks for reply maybe i worded it wrong by saying she acts like a pup which she does do ,but so does my three year old bull cross , when i let her have a look in my eyes she was ready and the way she worked she was, but since then shes gone backwards, previous litters of the mother and grand mother have come good, i have taken what you have said on board though thanks.
