Acts of Sportsmanship.

I can remember a few over the years. Fittingly for me, this one is in black and white.I was at this game and literally stayed off work partying for two days after it.

By today's standards its a bread and butter save but Eusabio obviously thought it spectacular back then.

The man was my hero, a gladiator and to me I understood what he did completely…..I remember it like it was yesterday and it was no surprise to me when I watched it, a warrior is defined by the power of his opponents not by killing people with knives in the back.

I think he would have been ashamed to score in that moment.

What happened to the ruthless " win at all costs "...." nice guys come last "...  " show me a good loser and i'll show you a loser " mentality Wilf ?

I know i know it was Paolo he was our sweetheart so we'll give him a pass ?

If you remember at the time Frank and Freddie Kanoute were getting dogs abuse from us fans they were both playing in that game do you think they would have got the same reaction ?....fans are funny like that i get it.

I dont see any reason to have pulled that game up nobody touched the keeper these things happen.....i think Paolo just had a brain freeze....besides which, with 4 defenders round him and not being the greatest header of a ball i very much doubt he would have scored from there anyway......iconic moment though for sure.

? It’s an interesting conversation mate, I think there’s a time to kick the keepers hand off and bury it and the ball in the back of the net and a time to be a proper chap……there ain’t much satisfaction in smashing the big f***ing animal of a centre back if he is already laid up with a broken ankle…..probably a bad analogy but I’m sure you get my drift.

Paulo almost inevitably gets a free pass from fans, I think that just gos with his status and the regard he was held in but at the same token I believe he could have scored in that moment if he had wanted…..never mind all the old bollocks of him saying he would have headed it in, he had the ability to bring that down and just plant it.

I never got all that abuse Young Frank got, made no sense to me and I think that’s a silly, shameful episode in our fans history because he was one of our own and a great prospect.

Kanoute ?…..mah…..players like that come and go, I only remember them when I see them in clips or someone mentions them.

Some players are just easily forgettable, Paulo will never be in that bracket and one of the many reasons is for stuff like that night against Everton.

The keeper wasnt touched though mate thats what im saying....nobody clattered him....its no different to what we moan about today when a player go's down and the opposition put the ball out.....why ?.........i preferred you when you was the ruthless " win at all costs " guy myself mate ?

Regards Frank no i never liked the shit he took either maybe being locals i have rose tinted goggles for him and his family but they are/were the epitome of sporting excellence in my book....proper football people regardless of fame and finances, they just love the game.

When someone folds like that on a football pitch and they have not been touched then you know it’s bad, I’m guessing most players wouldn’t give it a second thought if he still laying there after a tackle……it’s all degrees of things mate and I don’t suppose any of us know until in the moment but I totally got why he caught that ball.

I wouldn’t have thought less of Paulo if he had brought it down and scored, I’d have been ecstatic, but I definitely thought more of him (if that was possible ! Lol) because he did catch it.

What about Bielsa telling his players to let the other side score after Leeds had scored a dodgy, but legitimate goal?

I personally like things like that, I think it’s an iconic moment…..they use the word “Respect” in football too much now days and for all sappy reasons but real respect is earned in the battle, in the confrontation, in the knocking and taking the knock and behaving like a man…..it’s seems to be something we are loosing more and more and football is poorer for it imho.

If Freddie Kanoute had done what Paolo done at that exact time he would of got pelters mate and you know it......Paolo was loved for it because he was Paolo,simple.....same as Dennis Laws non celebration, anyone else it wouldnt have even been noticed but you've now got bog standard players running away not celebrating scoring a goal because they have a long lost connection to the club they just scored against....a lot of it is over emotional " look at me " type bollocks in my opinion.....Paolo's included.

I cant agree with the whole moral code of " when someone folds like that " yes you're going to see occasional random acts of sportsmanlike behaviour but in a sport where UNsportsmanlike behaviour and cheating is tolerated and even taught.....nah a moral code dont wash with me mate.

I don’t need to convince you mate, I just don’t agree.

Theres moral codes in all walks of life, they ain’t always shared by everyone but they do exist, why should football be any different ? ?
