Mate I've only been doing it about 18 months so I class myself as a novice. There is more experienced lads on here than me so maybe they could help with advice. I bought a minelab Vanquish 540 and just got some blue tooth headphones which I must say are brilliant. It's not having a wire and not having to take of the headphones to dig so much easer. Vanquish 540 about £400 mate. I think and some of the lads might put me right that the 540 is a good entry level machine. it's a switch on and go take a little while to get used to the tones and you will dig a lot of square nail to start with. Theres loads on YouTube about the 540 and the two slightly lower 440 and 340. It don't miss a lot dug 9 inches down for the smallest of curtain ring the other day about 10mm diameter. Good idea to get a hand pointer as well mate. Surely if you have permission from a farmer is it not okay? Beaches I would think no problem. Sure gets you out and at my age the exercise is good for the health. On average I do about four miles even in a small paddock it's surprising. Gets a bit addictive Lol. Hope thats some help. Cheers Arry Nice find ,my brother does a lot of detecting and at one point he used to go out with few lads all over UK hitting the arcelogical dig sites at night "poaching * they found all kinds and got some nice bits , When you find Roman gaming peace's and air pins etc you probably on or next to a Roman villa or settlement He was detecting along the river near Peterborough few year ago and found a gold cameo pendent and after some research he found it once belonged to Mary Queen of Scots. she had worn a gold chain with 3 cameos on and it and this was one of them ,it was torn off her neck on the journey to the village she was beheaded at near Peterborough , He payed the mortgage off with the money he got from it and it now sits in British museum,
