My new rifle. Sako Quad in .17HMR with SAK moderator and Nite Eater 6-24x56 illuminated mildot scope. I have already put down rabbits at 180 yards with it. Lovely bit of kit. Thanks to Baldie for helping me out with the choice on this one - I think t is a great long range rabbiting tool.

John Galway pointed me towards the Magnum of this one. I'd like to handle one.

How does this fair compared to a .22. (what sort of dough was that, if you don't mind me asking.

Hi,

Deker - not sure what you mean - I have not been doing anything with it other than screw it on my rifle and fire it - perhaps you can be a little more specific? Cheers.

Knifebar - in my limited experience it is a nice round. It has greater range and more knockdown power than a .22LR. That said, the rounds are expensive and it is relatively noisy. In terms of cost, the rifle was about £500 I think, the mod was £30 and the scope was £150. All in all a bit less than I spent on my .22LR - an Anschutz carbine. The biggest difference for me is when buying bullets as if you are used to the low cost of .22LR subsonics, the .17HMR rounds make you wince!

DS - Glad you like the scope. It isn't an expensive one but it is working well!

I've got both, you can't beat the .22lr as a general rabbiting rifle and lamping gun....no way, quiet, cheap, deadly the .17hmr is great for daytime longshots though and very flat shooting with greater range, does cause quite a bit of damage and the rounds are x3 cost of .22 ammo.

Hi Snelly

...the moderator....blast residue seems to be coming out of the joint at the front..have you had it apart..perhaps it was just not tightened up enough during manufacturer. Either that or maybe you have been firing into a very strong wind!

Cheers

Snelly nice gun i have the same.

I'm not 100% sure but you should out if the sak is proofed for 17HMR ( i don't think it is )

plus your bi-pod is on the wrong way around.

Happy shooting.

I thought the SAK was fine with the HMR but stand to be corrected if found not to be!

You have an interesting point with the Bipod and mine are always mounted with feet pointed to the end of the barrel and not to the butt.

I have however heard an arguement to mount the Bipod as shown here which is meant to reduce any small bipod bounce, never tried though as I've never had any problem mounting it as you suggest.

Cheers

i have a sak and it does the same thing mate. the blast residue leaks out the front and back abit. no matter how tight you do it up. i dont use it anymore as i have a dm80 now on mine. the hmr does burn the inside of the sak abit after alot of use. but i found it done a good job on the hmr. but not up to the same build as the dm80 that is the best mod ive tryed on hmr. soild build, easy to clean, and made just for the 17 bullet. so no leaks.

love the sako mate top rifle  bet your have some fun with that. get a dm80 mod for it if you want a bit better mod in time ;) will cut down the overall length to as it go's back over the barrel. so nice and compact 8)

Hi,

Thanks for your note. SAK is approved but I am on the look out for a DM 80 to replace it.

Secondly, bipod - I am not sure it makes much difference which way around it is. If I am out on an argocat or mule then it makes sense for it to be this way around as I don't know if I will need to shoot off the bipod or from a standing position. If it is the latter, I find having the legs up under the barrel to be better for me as it means I can hold the stock properly. In this pic, the bipod was just put on for zeroing so I didn't feel it mattered which way it went on.

Cheers,

Snelly
