Just look for a Shepherd from health tested parents with decent hip and elbow scores. Then check that the parents have good nerves and that should be enough.Unless you're going to give it a serious amount of work you dont need anything from serious working blood lines.

No serious work will be done I want something that's decent round the family  but bark when needed temperament is more important than anything I won't go down the working lines as I don't have that kind of work needed but I don't want a vet liability either

Aye mate she a wierd cookie at times, but I wouldn’t changer her for world, like I said it’s prob down to us, we don’t mingle a lot outside our own, I worked a lot on me own an hunt on me own, my lad hunts her an she knows he a youngster I’m sure cos she even more on point when it’s his that got her out haha my wheaten cross was same, fkr all we socialise them as pups they do end up working one on one a lot after that

Best way to be

Lad I used to knock  about with  had a black Shephard that we used to lamp rabbits fox and deer with .Never have I seen such an athletic dog since .He would pick a pheasant up alive but shake the hell out of a fox .He was called Satan .I wonder how that name would go down these days ?

He sired some very good lurcher pups put to a grey from racing kennels here .

One stands out in my mind ,a bitch called Cash ,short for Cashmere .

She took some gear in her life when things were more relaxed .

I was talking to one of the squaddies  on a camp near me where they train Shepherds as all rounders and he said they are very much one man dogs .Attack and search and rescue ,bomb dogs and house pets .Thats some order of commands and mindset .

Says to me they are probably the best at the job as in all rounders not specific .

There is a young Spanish couple we bump into some mornings that bought a Mali pup on the back of watching loads of vids on how clever and how easy they are to train  ..they give no thought to how much time , effort and knowledge is required to get a dog to that level, I’m sure they think they can give the dog a book and let it crack on , now nearly six months old they are getting dragged along for its early morning less than a mile walk ..if ever there’s a disaster waiting to happen it’s them ..

I find Labradors some of the most unstable dogs I’ve met on walks

Spot on mate, I've said on here before, that the dogs that have kicked off on Buck are labs. Was 3  males, 2 black, one red one, Buck not dog aggressive, he don't want a fight, but them twats went for him. It got to be in the breed, that 3 different people with male dogs up for a fight, only the other week a male lab was  hackles up, walking past Buck, so it deff in them. I think poss, poor training, and show lines, because when I used to beat, the labs I seen were well behaved, with other dogs. These were all working line bred dogs, plus the owners were on top of the dogs, not cruel, but firm with them. Regards temps of the 3 breeds gsd, bel mal. Dutch shepard. I going on the dogs I've seen, byhe Dutch shepard, a lad of here had a bitch once few years back, it was brill temp good watch dog,  easy round his family  kids etc, a real nice animal, I know lad got bel malx deerhound type lurcher, real nice bitch great working dog,  good with family  and good watch dog. Buck dam pure black gsd bitch, was from East Europe lines, 34 in nice straight back, healthy, good  watchdog, but one you got the OK from owner, she was fine. The best guard dog I've seen was big black gsdx collie type fog, big 80 lb twat, this thing would have no prob. It was on a chain in the day at the farm, but at night was loose, farmer told me you have shoot him, to get past him, but  fast and get up to them quick, and rip them up. I do know from ex RAF /police dog handler, that dogs have beaten, kicked etc.but still go in to the bloke, they never backed down. Only a bullet stop them. He did like bel mal as well. But these big  dogs 80lb, not little 60lb things, think they got gsd in them as well. Gsd are great breed if you get well bred one, but  do much unhealthy crap  poor temps out there, you really got to search for a well bred litter. I think maybe nice Dutch shepard might be good choise if you can put alot of time in to it. Why not get  lurcher with gsd, Dutch, mal, x type lurchers, they be healthy and prob guard alas well, mind don't guard, but outside in a kennel, and old bryn never barked, so he just copied him. Think if been inside with little woody he would have been more of a guard dog. But  when loose in my garden no fecker ever  would  chance him I don't think, just looking at the big bugger  even though he  got soft temp ?

If I was looking for a family guard  I’d be tempted to go down the working mastiff/bandog route

yeh nice pit x boerboel , there more healthy  than bullmastiffs , and mastiffs , but all mastiff types are unhealthy today , far to big and heavy, drop good pit in there , should  drop that big size down, and make it more healthy at say  80-100lb animal , nice bitch be good guard, and family dog, plus no shedding dog hair either , Buck only 1/2 gsd, and  sheds his coat a lot .

My neighbours think I’m telling lies an think my half cross is a shepherd cross haha she a serious guard dog aswell, we had a lad look over back fence few weeks ago looking for a gate handle( he thought it was next doors gate am had been told to open gate am leave parcel at back door) fcuk this bitch missed the lad by a ball hair, near took his face off ? got a hatred for cops in uniform aswell, an a serious distrust of any with drink in them, sweetest dog I ever known with the family an even outside, but another time me and me lad was out an a guy started getting lippy, as soon as my mood changed so did hers an she was just waiting to get close enough to lunge haha sayin that my wheaten x wasn’t dissimilar, it must be the way we bring them up or summat, cos we are quite a wierd family ?

We heard a dog barking the other day while at work, when we looked over the road it was a Kangal up on hind legs at the fence, and what looked to be a Caucasian shepherd pup sitting quietly, that Kangal looked so out of place in the tiny gated pathway of a terraced house, it's an absolute monster with a bark to wake the dead
