Ken's Deputy 4,460
I've seen people do it, on you chube. Always amused and pleased me. They make ingots out of it. Saw one bloke, he had a garage fully shelved out. Fukking bank vault of brass, copper and ally ingots! Brilliant, it was. Though, god knows why! Just appeals to me Saw one guy; Some take away, or what ever, gave him a shit ton of used containers. Still greased with gravy and such. No worries! He squashed the lot. Slung them all in his clay pot thing and lit the gas ring. Reckoned the smell was delicious! Yeah. Another ingot of pure ali was born. I love it! I eat a family sized pie, every night. All those 'tin foil' trays! Drinks cans too. Sack loads of them I've chucked in the 'bottle bank' down the years. I'd fukkin Love to sit here, cooking up my pie trays. Melting old three pin plugs. All that. But, I'd be doing it for shits 'n giggles. And the gas would probably outweigh any eventual value. Thoughts?
chartpolski 24,779
Not worth it. The scrap man pays by weight, not shape, and the end user will only melt it down to suit their own specifications anyway. Then theres the energy cost and the work and tools, etc to take into consideration. It may look nicer, but it won't be cost effective. Cheers.

Yeah, like I say; Gas alone ... When ever I've given it a passing thought, the cost of one of those clay tubes they melt it in? Then, yes, there'll be tongs, ladles, god knows I honestly think it must just be a hobby / mild addiction with the guys who do it. Collecting is a hell of a drug! Must be a kick, to survey All those shiny blocks Got to admit though; All those pie trays ..... Be fukking epic, to have a big ingot sitting there! " Fukk! Silver? " 'Nah. Pie trays.'

big sid 1,127
when my old man was a broker we had a non ferrous yard and a ferris yard i used to find empty beer kegs lying around(usually at the pubs back door) and when he closed i'd go and melt them down along with some alli picks, until old bill came calling.we had a small furnace that could take a few engines a time so made some decent cash.

I think it's got something to do with the whole melty poury thing that gets me Quite annoying, actually; When I've had a burn off, I'll quite often notice 'puddles' of melted ali left behind. I did, once try suspending a tin of 3 pin plugs over where I burn shit. Never did know quite what became of that ...

DIDO.1 22,846
I understand your sentiments with stacking bars. I have a couple big ingots of silver, I'm really attached to them and they mean more than the equivalent value in gold. I keep looking at silver cups and plates in antique shops and think 'i could melt them down and make big bars....to just stack up' I've had a few scrap collections, just little piles of copper pipe and brass couplings etc. But the piles are unsightly and have to be weighed in. If I could melt it I could hoard it. Edited September 9, 2022 by DIDO.1 2

Just watched This kunt with the cans! It actually ends with suggesting we subscribe: " For More Melting Goodness " So, it Is a 'Thing'! It's like Scrap Porn! Fukk me, if I had a furnace, I'd be camped out by the bottle bank, snatching up everyone's drink cans! Just to melt down and stack up! (Might go and look at some Brass later.
