Its a myth imo. There is a book written by a retired Texas Ranger who explains how they tracked illegals coming in from Mexico over scrub, rocks and desert. Fascinating reading and I would think that there was more chance of tracking that way than using a dog. I reckon a dog could track for no more than 12 miles a day in several short stints, in ideal conditions, with plenty of water available.

I was gifted a 6 month old saluki in saudi, and when I had it put down at 17 years old, the guy that gave it to me sent an 18 month old doberman to replace it.

It wasn't a breed I ever would have chosen, but it would have been churlish and disrespectful to have refused it.

I ended up bringing it home with me when I retired, and I loved that bitch !

Faithfull, defensive, loyal, even the missus loved it and she has nothing whatsoever to do with my dogs.

I had the Doberman, (not my missus !), put down when her back legs went and she got the Doberman head wobble when she was 12.

Would I have another Doberman ? Probably not, but I have fond memories of her ?

Cheers.

That's like what used to happen in the canteen on nights when I let Jet in off leash. He would sit in front of the one with the biggest sandwich and just give him 'the look'.  Always worked ?

I have an ongoing dispute with a local 'keeper, and some years ago him and two of his pals pulled me as I was walking over the two fields between my Allotments and house.

I had the Doberman and Delta, my little Beddy type with me. The keeper threatened to give me a hiding, showing off in front of his pals.

Anyhow, I leashed up the lurcher and called the Doberman to my side. I said you can try to give me a hiding, but you'll need to be good. The Doberman seemed to sense the tension and gave that stare and low growl that only a doban can..... I could see the confidence draining from the 'keeper so I just laughed at him and walked off. Would she have attacked him ? I don't know, but he certainly didn't want to find out ! ?

Cheers.

'Protection' dogs sell for megabucks. Even 'guard' dogs trained by professional suppliers fetch enormous prices.

If I was younger I wouldn't mind entering the business. Seems easy money to me. All you need is a Web site, decent premises and a brass neck to ask big money for your dogs.
