chartpolski 23,147
Why try to compare different types of hare ? Different animals, different ground, different style. Ive ran brown hare, white hare and I've ran hares in Ireland, but to be fair, they were probably brown hares, not Irish hares. One thing is sure, I enjoyed running all of them, wether it be on the Northumberland fells, the Cairngorm heather or the Irish paddocks Cheers. 6 Quote Link to post
jigsaw 11,863
I'm no expert,I've caught a lot of hares with old sonic and a few others before him,and what makes the difference I expect is the land, and the obstacles...at times you may not see the outcome of the course until the dog meanders up the field with the catch in it's mouth, and coming from a completely different direction as to where you expected him to have been, all the stupid illogical and at times insulting comments show pure ignorance on the subject, I don't get worked up over that,it's farcical at times,if you have a dog that can catch the Irish hare consistently, then you have a decent dog,end of story 11 Quote Link to post

If so sorry mate but no they're not. As to comparison of Irish to mountain, you said it yourself, subspecies, not seperate species ie they are lupus timidus Mountain hare - Wikipedia EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG Brpwn hare is a different species European hare - Wikipedia EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG So sorry mate its not me that's being a bollock of the highest order,, I've found that people who disagree with good reason put that reason up as a counter argument whereas people who argue without good reason resort to personal attacks as they have nothing else. Always a bit sad to see. That pic of Irish hare looks more like a rabbit and you can see the brown hare a bigger stronger animal made for speed 1 Quote Link to post

Irish hare..mountain hare... I've ran neither so can't comment..have you ran either or both... your posts read like you are being derogatory towards the Irish hare...hence the Irish lads having a pop at you... the Irish lads are telling you that it's a good test of a dog..I do know lads from England that have run them that have said they are a good test and completely different to the mountain hare... after all is said and done I do agree with you with regards to park coursing not being our thing..I think its a poor sport to be honest..and like jiggys original post highlights...it seems is being run in a shoddy maner ...and is doing f**k all good for field sports in general Not knocking anyone just the idea of a hare run from a box, the stress of capture moving etc is going to have an effect. I've used a bagged rabbit to start a pup as a lad but never since. As to comparing hares, I recon any hare given fair law on its own ground is a test for a dog and that running them regular would be good prep for running brown hares. The Irish may well be as hard to take as a brown on their own ground but, on an open grass field without the natural lay of the land to use to their own advantage, ditches, hedges, etc then I recon you get the best possible to make it a match.
