Low velocity .223 loads

Recommended Posts

Played around with it's the other day.Had a bunch of cast .225 bullets still lying around and I'm not doing any 100yd testing with them for a while. Saw some fox squirrels running around the yard and figured it would be fun to try and make a low velocity deal I could shoot out my .223 H&R Ultra varmint at short range and not have to worry about crazy over penetration and the like. Basically a .22lr replacement if I ever run out again or need something with a little bit more punch. Honestly it would probably make more sense to actually play with that .22hl hornet I bought last year and have yet to shoot but when has coon sense ever been my area of expertise ??

Honestly probably just going to be using them to shoot in my front yard as a gallery load type of thing.FB_IMG_1658595476285.jpg.8160310d86abf23cf1fd8cc0e19d6c80.jpg

So yeah just took some accurate 2015 I had been using when testing these cast bullets in .223 before  dropped damn to 12gr and added a .2gr dac on filler in to keep the power from moving too much since 12gn barely takes up any space in th case and I really didn't have a tone of better powder for the application like unique or bullseye.

And no this isn't compressing the powder like a wad in black power would

Then a custom CBTO that keeps it a hair off the riflingFB_IMG_1658595490734.jpg.eae054a35fc55dc175d76e7f6c52ba13.jpg

And proceed to shoot out my front door into my .22lr berm. 30yd was the teast distance because honestly that's all these are really for. Many out to 50yd but what's max.

12gr was still pretty loud. Much quieter then a full horse .223 load I use but still something I wanted ear protection for.  Didn't Chronograph this load but 16 gr gave me right at 2200fps with a three shot group under 1" @50 with no ledding so figured this should have been going mabye 1700 ? Shooting 30yd with a fixed 100yd parallax scope wasn't very good for accuracy but still managed decent accuracy. 6rd btwFB_IMG_1658595500706.jpg.953813aeef550deff95d4d543609e192.jpg

Then I decided to drop down in power charge more to 9grains of the same powered. Little bit better. Still pretty loud but more like a .17hmr.  FB_IMG_1658603199067.jpg.089b3984745590c293a40b8a70da9755.jpg

Not the best but if I'm being 100% honest that decent for taking small game. Especially with a 55gr projectile.

Did have problems with unburned power in the 9gr load though so might try some pistol power I have and see what happens.

That and I'm probably going to switch Scopes to AO and see if that helps. Anyhow just a little something I've been messing with.
