The Sporting Agent 0
I have had a similar debate with someone before, and was shot down for suggesting he looked on his own childhood through rose tinted glasses. We all do it. People believe that we are living in some sort of crime ridden society, with youths running around like crazed animals ready to shoot or stab the first decent person they come across. I hear it all the time, about how crime is on the rise, no one has respect and the youth of today have become like half tamed animals. Well i think this is false. The media has much to be blamed for in these cases, they love nothing better than to stir up mass panic in order to sell newspapers and it’s this type of scaremongering that give the general public a false impression. Sure there’s crime, and crime has risen, but that’s a natural increase due to an increase in the population. And yes kids are stealing from other kids, but then they always have. Once, kid’s may have stole each others conkers and parents would sort it out amongst each other, but now children are walking the streets with MP3 players and mobile phone’s and it’s these that are now getting stolen, as a result, parents are far more inclined to contact the police which is one way of accounting for the rise in youth crime. Before blaming the children, i think we should be blaming ourselves for allowing society to become so materialistic that kids feel inadequate or outcast’s for not having the smarted clothes, expensive mobiles or the best computer’s. I may be getting old, but when i was a child i was happy with a skipping rope I'm not getting old....well, not THAT old, but I agree with much of what you say. Be it kids or anyone, the media puts such emphasis on us all having the latest and greatest. We see all this fake flash bling celebraty rubbish in everything and everywhere we look. Made to think and feel like its our god given right to have the same, that by not having it we are lesser people. Society and this systematic craze for celebrity material obsessions and tat is one of the biggest reasons "the youth of today" feel the way they are I'm sure. I know my young niece feels very preasurised in school about such things. Luckily she looks up to me (God knows why!!) and aspires to travel and learn and get her smarts that way, she lives in a small village in Snowdonia and want to get out to see the world, look at the bigger picture and not get stuck in the rut of many her peers. For a 16 year old she is very naieve in many ways, boys, drink, going out etc.....but she's clever, smart and has values even if she doesn't have much money, she certanly isn't going without . Kay 3,709
I sympathise with those of you talking about your "children" above. I don't mean that to sound patronising if it does. I'm 29 with a 4 yo (almost) step daugher, so don't have any of the experiances that you are talking about. But we see and hear on a daily basis stories and pictures in the media portraying the younger generation as louts, wearing hoodies, standing on street corners causing trouble; then we hear the otherside, the "hug-a-hoodie" debate, that these guys are missunderstood, that they can't get jobs because of public perception not that they won't get jobs etc..... I was wondering what you as parents of children you openly admit are too lazy to get jobs or do anything constructive think needs to be done; is it society, is it them thinking the world owes them a living, is it popular media for giving the belief that everyone should have the same money and bling as the Beckhams.....I don't know; I personaly think its society in general being apathetic and this is just an extreme example.......... Is there an answer? Well i think now it makes no difference how you rear kids, i didnt go out playing bingo 7 nights a week & drinking myself to collapse, my kids never had to feed themselves , they had clean ironed stuff daily & i did what i thought was right, 1 turned out a mess and the other ones behaving himslef so far, so who knows wht some turn out like my eldest lad
Andrea 2
Celebrities? I hate the whole idea that kid’s look up to these people as role models. But then that’s the kind of world we live in. They don’t become celebrities by being clever, having morals and behaving in a respectful manner, rather they become famous by having a breast enlargement and flashing them around town, and as a result, they get hero worshiped by men and envied by women. Why are we so interested in these people?

And I'm confused about my ethnisity; white guy wearing a middle eastern scarff!! Oh I'm all confused......do I shave my head, wear a man-skirt and speak in a squeeky voice or grow my hair long, swear, mugg old ladies and wear a hoodie?? I just don't know which way to turn!! Or for that matter any of the scum that are shoved in our face by the media, shown for all their weaknesses and indiscressions even crimes, yet they get away with murder (or worse) and we are told that these people are icons, and people we should aspire to emulate.... Andrea 2
True, i believe Amy Winehouse has now gone into rehab. Isn't it funny when a celebrity starts loosing some of their status, they decide to announce they're going into rehab, had a miscarrage or slept with someone's husband/ wife or in some cases both TSA, i notice the scarf, but i just thought you where ethnically elightened ( don't know what that means, i just made it up ) Don't do a David Beckham, skirts don't work on men, unless they are scottish. Don't try it with the old ladies, some of them a pretty vicious and you might get hurt Edited January 28, 2008 by Andrea

Havent really got the legs to carry if off though Its when I wear the Ghandi pants my real ethnic enlightenment comes into force.....ssshhhhhh I might get the racist element PMing me now wanting to burn be and telling me to go "home"! Seriously though, that Winehouse woman has a bloody great voice but should she even be given column inches?? Every picture of her shows her stoned, snorting coke, sticking the V's up......and we are meant to swallow that this is glamarous and exciting and we should aspire to it!! Surely all that rubbish just does more to fuel the fire that are her inner personal troubles as well as show to others that by acting as she does you can become famous......get all the media coverage you want and have all the glam materialistic stuff that thay can't actually be botherd to work to earn? I don't know, its just one opinion; its a bit chicken and egg, but surely it cant be helping

The Sporting Agent 0
Yes but no bugger as clean cut & decent as me sells rags True....round in circles we go. It sells rags, therefore its getting promoted and seen, glamourised and mugs try to emulate it; even if not intentionally they believe its the norm, its acceptable and just asume they can behave in the same way.....theres no winning I guess
Guest craftycarper
Most of it's a load of old crime is on the up, stabbings and murder are daily occurances and i think the scum far outweigh the good or maybe i should rephrase that.....there is more scum out there on the streets every night than good, maybe all the good ones are indoors. The media show the facts, in most cases they are right, my kids have been brought up to know right from wrong and my eldest is still an arsehole. Since he was a baby i have been there for him, clothed him,fed him, taken him to doctors, dentists, school trips, cubs /scouts, camping, fishing trips and into adulthood have tried to help him, if he can treat me his own flesh and blood as he has these last few years, what the hell would he do to a total stranger given the chance.
