rabbit bashing success!

Recommended Posts

i know this is my first post and for that i apologise as i should really have introduced myself previously but i always feel its better to talk about what you know that try and educate on what you don't so this is an account of my shooting yesterday 22/01/08 if you read this any other time!!!

well it started off as a discussion at work like most good ideas, i mentioned to a few people i work with that i have a rabbit infestation and as fast as i shoot them 5 more pop up to take their place! which is a blessing and curse in disguise!

So it started with 4 men, four rifles and 2 ferrets with the simple view of stocking my freezer, keeping the coney population in check and giving us all a well deserved rest from the stresses of our work!

the morning could n't have been better with a fierce winds and driving rain being laid to rest for the day with the sun weakly warming the sodden ground and making the land damp but passable for the first time in a long time

i got down early to survey the scene and with a few cotton tails springing for cover it looked positive signs and on meeting drinking copious amounts of coffee and reminising about previous successes on different permissions i kind of felt a duty to make sure that everyone had a good time and got there fair share of shots away, we each cornered off fields and went to work making ourselves invisible and the first shot came my way after about 10 minutes with a large buck along with numerous smaller does appearing from all areas at once, like buses but worse!

30 yards on the button and the only audible sound from my pod mounted silenced AA S400 thumbhole was the crack of the big bucks skull as he cart wheeled into the hedge, a quick jog over to collect the first of the day saw my spot runined for a couple of hours at least so i just sat up and waited for the sound of other similar successes but after an hour i decided a break would be in order and it appeared my spot was the only one where anything had chosen to take residence so a change of tactics involved ferrering a couple of warrens produced the goods at the second attempt with 3 coneys from the second after a blank on the first.

More coffee...

team photo and then one of our number was off to do the duty of seeing the other half which the other three of us had managed to put off for a few hours more and a resounding start to the day!

next it was decided to have a few more shots and a couple of missed opportunities and back for

more coffee...

next thing was to nail a huge warren right on the boundary of the yard and with three more in the bag and two runners we had six and most were happy to call it a day and beat the rush hour traffic, i had other ideas and decided that there had to be one more shot out there so back to where i started i spent the rest of dusk waiting for a clear shot, the first few that came along were 45 yards plus and outside of my realistic kill zone so a long wait insued waiting for them to crawl ever close and then as if out of nowhere a rabbit popped up about 28 yards to my left and another even easier shot 26 yards behind me, after an agonising slow turn so as not to be seen the wary little coney i took aim at the 28 yard shot. Once it was pin perfect the next view was a bunny backflipping with a pellet firmly lodged in its brain, stonecold dead where it fell. That was that for the day with the sun setting i was more than happy with a great days, shooting, ferreting and generally socialising with friends and none of it cost a bean...well maybe a few coffee beans but nothing more!

all in all a great day and one for the photo album i expect when the prints are in!
