Ratting - North Yorks Moors - with the Borders

Recommended Posts

Went back up to our permission on the North Yorks Moors on Sunday. Took all our lot, 4 Borders and 2 Lurchers, and our friend had his spaniel and russell. Bag wasn't as great as the last time, but we had some good sport and some great fun!

Our young Border, Hope, who is 8 months old, did well, and we were really pleased with her. Getting well stuck in towards the end of the day and marking holes. :clapper:

First of all we went to the farm and checked round the back of the grain stores, where it was absolutely wick last time. Straight away the dogs were marking. Our lot had already had a couple before I'd turned the camera on!

One rat ran under these sheets... got the smoker in. Atol said it was in there and she's never wrong. It bolted into an old shed, and after running rings round us for what seemed like ages, old lass Pendle finally got it.

We accounted for about 30 rats round here, before moving off to some ditches in a neighbouring field. As we pulled up the rats were moving. It was a bit tricky getting the rats here, as there were that many holes the rats were just messing with us. Undergrowth was quite thick and heavy so it wasn't that easy going. Only got a few out round here.

Didn't spend over long here, need to rethink how to tackle this area for next time!

Moved on to a new bit of permission we'd gained from the first farmer, that was supposedly heaving with rats. Everywhere was water logged and a sodden mudbath.

All in all, not a bad day at all. Gained some new permission, had a good laugh, good sport. And 2 farmers are 70 odd rats lighter.
