Think the navy’s started that after the Sullivan brothers all died on same ship, I can remember watching the film as a lad, old black an white film called, the fighting Sullivans, an then years later can remember hearing them mentioned in saving private Ryan, jait summat that always stuck with me ?

They now have a ship named after them in honour. The USS The Sullivans.

A great uncle of mine was in the engineers during the landings. He suffered what they’d call nowadays ‘life changing injuries’, sometime after landing. I remember as a kid at family gatherings, no-one

My own grandfather on my dad's side, was a spitfire pilot. Who got shot down and survived to tell the tale. He was 19 or 20 years old. He passed away when I was young. What I do remember is the side of his face was scared with shrapnel and that he never talked about the war and said it was nothing to be glorified. He later went on to become a fairly successful businessman in his own right  and owned a few one being a high end wine merchant's. When I  as was young he gifted me his wings and dog tags and they sit in my office on the wall. According to Google the average life expectancy of a spitfire pilot was just 4 weeks.
