Irish Lurcher 1,013
paocher9991 had me thinking with his last post bout his bitch ripping her legs. You have touched on something that I discussed with a friend of my only last week. We were both out in the field and his bitch ripped her stopped, real bad, bearing in mind that he had taped up the stopped before we left his house. Any way, I was discussing with him the benefits of having a second dog in the event of such an injury to either dog, to be honest that’s why I decider to take on another dog, just in case. I would hate to be left dogless during a season, when clearly you can avoid this by having a back up dog. Is this the norm in the lurcher world, to have a second of even third dog to cover any injuries that may be picked up during a season? Or do you just like to bring on more dogs? Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
I am dogless this season. Due to 1 particular bitch that did not make the grade. I gave her away to a fella, who has her as a pet and companion, she is doing well. I have recently got 2 pups, for next season. If one gets injured, i have the other as back up, as i will not go threw the same thing as i have done this season, dogless on a good widy night, my mates ringing me, to tell me what a good night they have had ect, or a good day. Irish Lurcher 1,013
My exact point Frank, a perfect example of what I was trying to say. Quote Link to post
Ossie 11
my mum has always told me that if you have one lurcher, you should have 2. a favourite one & a spare, because it's sods law something will happen to your favourite! mum & dad always used to keep an old ex track greyhound as a spare dog. despite mum always banging on about this, i'm not allowed to have another dog while i'm living with my parents! THE WORST THING ANY LURCHERMAN CAN DO IMO ............... TRYING TO BRING ON TWO PUPS AT ONCE IS A RECIPE FOR DISASTER .......... VERY FEW MEN HAVE THE TIME , .......... VERY FEW MEN HAVE THE AMOUNT OF GAME TO GO AT ............ AND MOST IMPORTANTLY ...... VERY FEW MEN GIVE BOTH PUPS AN EVEN CHANCE , MOST WILL FAVOUR ONE OVER THE OTHER HENCE ONE PUP SEES MORE TRAINING , WORK AND GENERAL BONDING NEXT THING IS A SAPLING UP FOR SALE , ......... THROUGH NO FAULT OF ITS OWN ..... DUE TO THE OWNER TAKEING ON FAR TOO MUCH ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

I got my first pup at 9 weeks old, She has bonded well with me and is now just over 4 month old at present. My second pup, i got 2 weeks ago, she is bonding well with me aswell, as im taking them out training seprately. They both behave very well when left alone and i want this to carry on when im out with one hunting and the other left behind. Nowt worse then a dog howling for the pack, when its been left alone, waking half the street!!! Edit to add, ......I, have plenty of time. Quote Link to post
Irish Lurcher 1,013
To a degree I would agree with your comments DG. I think you are right to a certain degree when you say that two pups are more than a handful, depending on the person who has taken reasonability for both pups. In your post I think you have tarred every lurcher man with the one brush , on one have we guys out there who are not fit to keep pigs , let alone a dog, and I have met them, but there are really good lurch men out there who are more than capable of taking sole reasonability for two or more dogs and bringing them on to very high standards , I have seen these dogs work at first hand, and I believe these guys dont desereve to be mentioned in the same sentence as the guys you refere to in your post. socks 32,253
what you must remember when keeping more than one dog is to give them all the equal amount of work ... keeping one dog as a back up just doesnt work as the dog will have seen so little work that it will be of little use to you when you finally get it out in the field ... i know so many blokes that keep more than one dog but will always send (old bob) out on the difficult rabbit or lamp (old nell) when the weather is spot on .... all your dogs should be given an equal chance so that you are not using a '' back up dog'' instead you have one laid up so you are just using your other dog .............. Agree 100% with you, all my dogs get the same treatment, its down to the dog owner to understand this and put it into practice. Quote Link to post
