Learning a second language

Recommended Posts

I watched short vids of learning French on YouTube and then download the soundtrack to mp3 and saved on my phone and played back while working..

P.s. it did not work for me as I didn't keep up wi it.. I soon forgot what I had learnt

Never had the temperament for it but I’m now considering it.

What useful tools are available these days? Anyone used apps that you can just flick on for five minutes a few times a day? Any more effort than that realistically I just won’t stick.

I’m interested in learning the basics of Italian. Literally enough to get by.

Dual lingo is a website that’s good to use.

My Jess is finalising her Alevel Spanish this month. Obviously she’s been speaking Spanish for a good few years now. About a year ago she decided to teach herself Italian, she did it in 6months. To the point she was babbling to her Exs family in Milan perfectly ?

If you’re going to learn a language, a structured learning approach is the best. I winged it with Spanish and tbf I’m pretty bad 11 years later ?

As a military man, I'd of thought learning Russian or Arabic would be good for career advancement ?

Cheers.

i know an black African lad who spoke 6 or 7 languages fluent and was working for the un last I heard . English , French , Portuguese and a few of the tribal variants . A proper case of the right tool for the right job , you can’t buy that skill set off the shelf  in reality

Google translate.?. Very useful.

I often find if I try to communicate in a foreign language, the person I'm speaking to will often say "English please. It's quicker."

If all else fails shout at the foreign b*****ds.

Deepl is far better than Google Translate

I knew an Ethiopian labourer who spoke Aramaic, Arabic, English and Italian.

A fiancé of my son spoke English, Arabic, Xhosa, Afrikaans and German, she was a diplomat.

Kinda shows that learning languages can be a gift, no matter what your background.

Cheers.

@Born Hunter I’ve asked our Jess what tools she’s used in the past. When she gets back to me, I’ll post them up ;)

If you want to pay her for remote learning, I’m sure she’ll be happy with that ?

Cheers. Thing is I know if it requires me to concentrate for half an hour every night or whatever I just won’t do it. It needs to be quick and easy. App based that rather than flicking through insta or whatever I can just flick on and rattle through a few structured exercises until I’m bored.

I want to spend a bit of time in Italy but I hate being in foreign speaking countries. I find it really off putting.

If it’s just phrases you want then a translation app is probably best but make sure they have the voice translation too, so you can listen and grasp the pronunciation.

If not, it’s structured learning mate. I think the dual lingo gives you tasks to complete, maybe that will suit time wise.

Yeah. I went to South Shields, once. Fukk That! Asked a bunch of lads if the bridge was down there? Nearly ended up in WW3!

They couldn't understand a fukking word I was saying and kept making this bubbling noise at me.

I thought they were taking the piss and was just turning incandescent and was about to launch a suicidal attack for honour. Then it hit me: We can't make head nor tail of eachother!

South Shields ! I spent a bit of time at the Marine College there .

They are called "sand dancers" , evidently because a lot of Yemeni Arab seamen settled there one time.

Strange place, not really sure if they are Geordies or Mackems.

Cheers.
