When I got married 47 years ago, our first house was a pit house in East Cramlington.

The widow wife next door was almost eighty and got a coal allowance of one ton a month.

It was more than enough for her, so she would shovel half of it into our coal house for free.

The fire was never out, just pull the damper down at bed time, lift it up next  morning, shovel of coal and away it went.

The water was allways boiling, and we had to run it off now and again.

I asked the missus if we got electric bills back then, she said no, the rent, rates, electric were all on the one bill.

Happy days.....or looking back through rose tinted glasses ?

Cheers.

I bet back then mate in them communities there were no pensioners who will have to decide will it be heat or eat.

I remember a mate when I worked at the pit having a raeburn solid fuel range cooker if I lived in a property out in the sticks I would be looking at getting one that's if there still made.

My grandads got a solid fuel one. Only oven he has never goes out heats his water and his radiators got log burner aswell. Can’t sit in his bungalow in winter in a jumper absolutely roasting. Only cost he has is buying coal for banking in at night

Couldnt live somewhere like that tbh

I worked with a lad called..in tower opencast BB he lived in aberdare housing estate..you know the name of the place..

He told me as a kid he used to wait outside the main pub in trecco Bay as a kid while his mother was in there getting drunk..and she would stagger out of there with some piss head blokes wanting a shag..

That conversation had an effect on me I will be honest..them high rise flats in aberdare which are knocked down now remined on that story..

Grandad uses logs off the farm just got to buy a bit of coal. Would say he’s got a good retirement but he’s 86 and lambing 200 ewes with a knee that’s knackered that he can’t get a appointment for. Tough old buggers that generation

Whats the reason for the energy bill rises?

The real reason that is.

The government raised the price limit that companies are allowed to charge per unit of energy. This was justified by the increase in gas wholesale price (what the utilities companies buy it in at before selling it on to us). Despite most of them making profits at the old rate last year they have raised their prices, allowed by the new limit.

I don’t buy that it’s simply profiteering, I’ve looked into such claims before and found them implausible. I’ve not found a definitive explanation as to why they are raising their prices despite most making profits last year tbh. The market is extremely volatile right now and although ‘21 was a good year ‘20 was terrible so maybe they are giving themselves a better margin to remain financially attractive in such volatile times.

Not sure on others but here’s the oil price over the last 2 year. That gets passed on to the customers of the utilities companies.

Thanks for that BH ??, it just feels like there's more to it than that, like we're being pushed to use less fossil fuel and what better way than to drive the prices up.. Joe public have to start turning the outside lights off at night and keep an eye on the units they're using same for unnecessary car journeys and the energy industry keeps making their very healthy profit margins.
