Lurcher beats full greyhounds in race

Recommended Posts

The derivative of the name lurcher is open to debate and will remain so as it seemed a uniquely English term I would guess its based on lurker as in sneak thief as a link to the owners as much as the dog whereas the ruling classes would have greyhounds.

But its is not dissimilar to the french le lévrier (greyhound) and many of our hunting terms hark back to the Norman conquest. Perhaps it was the term for a greyhound type back when there weren't any purebreds and greyhound came in all shapes and sizes so were basically lurchers. When the greyhound begun to be more standardised what was left were the old types of leviers amoungst the poorer sections of society as an unstandardised mixture so it became the name for non pure sighthounds. Much as the old name for rabbit is cony which comes from conejo, Spanish for rabbit, from whence they likely came with their earliest keepers, we often have a colloquial name that harks back to a historical term.

I had a whippet in the early 70's that had collie and Greyhound three generations back on his dams side, and Greyhound four generations back on his sires side, as can be seen on his pedigree, but was accepted by the B.W.R.A. as a "Whippet";

Was he a lurcher or a whippet ?

To be honest, he caught as many hares as he won races, so it didn't worry me a hap'orth what he was classified as ! ?

Cheers.

That black whippet was double "Bilko" bred on his sires side.

I remember the owner of Bilko saying he would have liked to have put Bilko to a Saluki bitch, and put a bitch pup out of that mating to a Bilko x greyhound dog.

Bilko threw exceptional pups to Greyhound bitches, the best scratch bitch I've ever seen, Daisy, was bred that way, Whippet sized, and as fast as a Greyhound over the sprint distance.

Daisy,

He was hoping to keep the size and speed and add the Saluki stamina.

This was back in the 60's, sadly he never got round to doing it.

Cheers.

Both Bilko and Blue Peter were producers of some fabulous racing whippets..

I had good honest bitches out of them both....

Fecked them all up on the Hares,....I was told, but I wouldn't listen.?

Love to go back to those carefree days,....rabbiting on the Saturday, and racing on the Sunday?

The black whippet had Blue Peter on his dams side.

We used to walk to the track, run a hare on the way there, then run in the handicap, then run a hare on the way home.

The whippets them days weren't as fast as today's, but didn't break as easily ?

Cheers.

No, they don't all use longdogs; I'll give you just four examples out of many.......there was a lad I know very well, used to be a member on here, who won almost every big lurcher race in the UK and Ireland with his 1/6th collie x 15/16th greyhounds.

And how about Markbrick ? He won countless races with his collie/Greyhound/whippets.

Or Geoff Fletcher with his Beddy/greys ?

Taysider off here won the Scottish Championship with his beddy/Whippet/grey.

As I said, your technically right with your "longdog" v "lurcher", but you're telling us something we already know ?

Cheers.

Every dog out of that litter that taysiders dog were all fast dogs the sire to them was a dog from geof fletcher
