He was a fast lurcher that was beating slow greyhounds but would never of had a look in with decent greys. 9 Quote Link to post

chartpolski 24,574
There's been non-ped whippets such as Memphis Belle and Loves Lockdown, that have beaten greyhounds and broken track records at Greyhound tracks, but to be fair, they have a fair bit of Greyhound in them and are almost as big as greyhounds. Also it's usually the sprint distance , 270-300 yards they win over, not the longer distances. I remember matching a non-ped Whippet, Robbo, (Bilko x Frozen Kill ), against a Greyhound, over 150 yards on a whippet track and winning by about two yards. Emboldened, I was then suckered in to a return match over 270 yards at a Greyhound track for a far larger bet. The Whippet led up to the first bend then the Greyhound took over and won easily! Ahh, well, I was young but soon learned ! ! There are whippets, lurchers and long dogs that have beaten greyhounds, but they are the exception rather than the rule, a good Greyhound will beat any other type of dog normally Cheers. 5 Quote Link to post

A long dog; there's nothing in there to slow it down, it's running dog to running dog. If it was 1/4 terrier or collie blood then its a different game Quote Link to post

One of these was deerhound/Greyhound, the other was Beddy/grey x deer/grey-Whippet/grey, but for the sake of simplicity I called them both lurchers. Cheers. 5 Quote Link to post

Not being pedantic at all; it's not a lurcher, it's a completely different animal. If it was 1/4 bull or collie it would have been a different story. Just look at the 'professional' show racers and they all use long dogs not lurchers; they're a faster animal with less 'wastage' Quote Link to post

And how about Markbrick ? He won countless races with his collie/Greyhound/whippets. Or Geoff Fletcher with his Beddy/greys ? Taysider off here won the Scottish Championship with his beddy/Whippet/grey. As I said, your technically right with your "longdog" v "lurcher", but you're telling us something we already know Cheers. 4 1 Quote Link to post
