What is the reasoning behind cutting off the ears ? is their a reason ?

I didn't watch the vid, I can imagine what it's like. The ears are tattooed and if someone plans to dump the dead dog in a ditch it can't be traced back to them if the ears are gone!

What Mike says is right but what I can't understand is some of the dogs with their ears cut off are still alive.

I've said for years that there is a lot to be said for putting a dog to sleep rather than giving it away, especially when you see how some of them end up.

In an ideal world, i would rather my dog was pts from behind eating a huge bowl of its favourite food.

I dont want its last emotion to be fear as it would be if i had a vet do it.

That's a brave statement Molly, especially in todays climate.I must say that I agree with you 100%. The trouble is we don't live in an ideal world.

On wednesday last week I was at the vets to get a greyhound checked out, there was 2 oldish labradors in the waiting room and the owners got talking about how upset/stressed their dogs got when they brought them to the vets and it didn't help when they had to wait over 30 min to be seen. :(

Have to say I enjoy going to the greyhoud racing dont see any thing wrong in culling greyhounds, lurchers, terrires or what ever that dont make the grade so long as its done humanley I for one would not support any ban on greyhound racing never will in fact I think Ill go twice a week instead of once a week
i do understand that breeding litters of pups that there not all gone be world beaters and in a breeding program you have to cull en to try to select the best no problem with that whatso ever its just in the racing industrie it allways gone attract people who are init for a quick buck and end up with horribble situations like this  Edited by hollands hope

My last dog was pts at home by the vet, thought it would be less stressfull for her,she still knew what was happening. It was quick and peacefull and the vet was brill mind you.

It just seems so wrong that the last thing on earth i can do for my faithfull friend is to cause them stress. To see your dog looking at you pleading cos they know vets cause pain

This day and age surely they could invent a tablet to do the same job?

there is good and bad in every situation as with people and dogs and it will always be so,the culprits who inflict this kind of suffering need punishing and keeping out of sports for good, but those videos are created to pull on the heart strings as sad as they are to win the vote of the general public we ourselves need to safe gaurd our future and take care not to let this hapen in our back yard.all the best.

totally agree, problem nowaday,s is people tend to see their dogs not anymore as dogs but as members of the family wich isn,t such a bad thing they should allway.s take care of their pets but that,s were the anti,s jump in and like you said pull on the heart string to their own advantage :hmm::no:

Whats the reason for cutting the ears off? And i don't want an answer like"coz there sick b*stards'" i want a proper one thanks :victory:

Greyhounds that are registered with NGRC and the Irish equivalent

have tattoo`s in their ears and these tattoo`s are the dogs identity

they also act as a way of finding the last registered owner,

however if the dog is sold on to the independant greyhound scene the dog is not necessarily still owned by the last "registered" owner as they never used to have to change ownership, new rules state that any dog that is no longer racing has to be officially registered as no longer racing with an address of new owner if any ,or stating that the dog has been PTS or is being used as a brood or stud, with hefty fines and ownership bans for people not fulfilling these obligations, the industry is trying to fix it`s problems but the wheels turn slowly, and as the new rules have not long been implemented dogs that changed ownership before are still in circulation

hope this helps clear up some of the confusion
