Don't forget,Putins original excuse for invading , and still is his excuse, was to protect the Russian speaking Ukrainians in the "breakaway" regions.

If he carpet bombs the entire country indiscriminately into submission that will prove his motive was a lie.

Cheers.

i'd agree its all empire building and i feel he thought he would get an easy ride, walk in and take over and the world grumble but do nothing real. Thankfully the world is doing a little more than grumbling and although it will be a negotiated outcome in the end, as all wars are, the actions of the world and especially Europe will have a big impact on his future choices, basically he's not getting the free ride he thought he'd get and that may well turn out to be very important in the coming years.

The thing is this war has been rumbling on for a long time. It’s just got a lot more overt all of a sudden. The eastern Ukraine has been a pretty wild place for about 8 years, with Ukrainian army and militias fighting Russian separatist militias and army and then Ukrainian army and militias struggling to get along etc. Lots of bombs and bullets flying about. And about 10,000 people killed. Up till now we haven’t really been overly bothered.

Putin doesn’t want to flatten Ukrain he wants it back in the fold of the old USSR as a functioning money earning part of the economy he gains nothing by levelling the place to the ground except the bill for rebuilding it …….

I think they expected the public and military to surrender and welcome the Russians, it don't look like the Ukrainians are too keen on jumping back in bed with the Russians though, perhaps they have a better way of life now... Russia expected a fairly quick surrender with minimal collateral damage, to "win" now they have to "flatten the place" as you say... but what will that bring them long term?

Escalation is a managed factor in all wars. It’s rarely as no limits all out fight. In the falklands the same was seen. The Vulcans didn’t flatten the Argentine mainland, the harriers flying combat air patrol didn’t shoot down argentine reconnaissance planes over the Atlantic as the task force steamed south. There’s consequences to actions that are perceived as disproportionate or excessive.

Pretty much what my slav mates  says,  he astonished how hard the Russian speaking Ukrainians are fighting,  crimea was a pushover  he was expecting pretty much the same,  Russia is looking evermore isolated ,if they flatten the place  its going to get ugly for Russia  then you'll see change from within I think. ?

That's really what it's about.

The Ukrainian government are simply defending their right to continue things as they were, and now they have the West to support it openly. It's so easy now to point the finger at Russia but it's not what it seems I'm certain of that.

Plenty of good men had roof top gun hold offs here.... Only then you were classed as a terrorist... Now there giving you an AK a few grenade's and a tank...then a home a car and full benefits.... Propaganda machine at its best.
