If he carpet bombs the entire country indiscriminately into submission that will prove his motive was a lie. Cheers. Edited March 1, 2022 by chartpolski

Thankfully the world is doing a little more than grumbling and although it will be a negotiated outcome in the end, as all wars are, the actions of the world and especially Europe will have a big impact on his future choices, basically he's not getting the free ride he thought he'd get and that may well turn out to be very important in the coming years. Expand The thing is this war has been rumbling on for a long time. It’s just got a lot more overt all of a sudden. The eastern Ukraine has been a pretty wild place for about 8 years, with Ukrainian army and militias fighting Russian separatist militias and army and then Ukrainian army and militias struggling to get along etc. Lots of bombs and bullets flying about. And about 10,000 people killed. Up till now we haven’t really been overly bothered. 2

Russia expected a fairly quick surrender with minimal collateral damage, to "win" now they have to "flatten the place" as you say... but what will that bring them long term? Expand Escalation is a managed factor in all wars. It’s rarely as no limits all out fight. In the falklands the same was seen. The Vulcans didn’t flatten the Argentine mainland, the harriers flying combat air patrol didn’t shoot down argentine reconnaissance planes over the Atlantic as the task force steamed south. There’s consequences to actions that are perceived as disproportionate or excessive.
