Someone I worked with was shot at point blank range with a 12 gauge and his police radio took the full impact. The second chamber misfired. When the gun was tested in the lab at Huntingdon it never misfired in 20 test cycles. And he still used to think he was unlucky.

I would also add, you have to consider the sheer scale of Russia in these things…..there will be soldiers in that army (same as 1940s) that come from places that are little more than primitive ! 
They probably never encountered a human being who wasn’t from their remote village before the army ! 
They may as well have been living in caves !
