In hindsight there was plenty of warning but that’s always viewed with 20/20 vision. Even on this thread there were posters saying such claims were warmongering. In fact France has just fired their top military man for failure to effectively predict the invasion. 

 I think its pretty clear now with the tactics they are using that Ukrainian forces have been under "elite special training" for quite some time now , probably  since 2014 .it's no coincidence that they have performed beyond expectations and it certainly wasn't a matter of giving regular soldiers some high end kit and hoping for the best.

Fair one mate. I don't think we have come that far tbh. Biologically we’re the same upright apes that were getting eaten by dire wolves and chasing entire herds of mammoths off cliffs! That was between bouts of murdering and raping other tribes and acts of casual infanticide and parricide in your own tribe. 

Its one reason I value defence so much. Peace is just momentary. We haven’t civilised or engineered our way out of war. Even in Europe. Of course if we maintain a very capable, experienced and well funded military then theres a greater chance of it being used for wrong. So there’s no right or wrong really.

Looks like Mariupol has finally fallen,  these lads have taken the brunt of it ,I'm amazed they managed to hold out this long tbh ,

Yup. The inception of the much derided Ranger regiment and its Special Operations Brigade is very fitting given all this. If what it becomes is anything in line with the marketing bumf around it. But the British army has a long and substantial experience in that sort of stuff anyway. They’ve been active in Ukraine and likely still are in Poland now.

I can’t imagine the level of intelligence and cyber fuckery that is going on in the West to support Ukraine. Russias monumental logistical cock ups can’t entirely be down to being dumb. Covert cyber ops from the best of the best helping to create cock ups? There are five recognised war fighting domains and Ukraine aren’t alone in all of them…

It’s remarkable really. We are unique in the animal kingdom in our ability to throw with accuracy and power. It’s to do with the structure of our shoulder. Very dexterous. That evolutionary development led to us realising the benefits of stand-off weapons that projectiles offer. Did that lead to the weapons development that delivered ICBMs etc? There’s a few other factors which helped us to dominate but I do wonder if that one led us down the projectile weapons path or if we would’ve gone that way anyway eventually…
