Tbf I believe the new military governments told them to leave. The French interventions in North Africa were quite surprising to the world. Let's not forget the average Russian soldier earns less than half what an American one does. So a billion will employ more Russian soldiers than it will Americans. The UK is fourth largest spender after the US, China and Russia. Russia isn't a mega rich country, its GDP is eleventh in the world, less than Italy. Corruption by the rulers and oligarchs and massive tax evasion is on a huge scale. Fighting a prolonged war will hurt Russia economically, so expect a fast, limited invasion of Ukraine, probably aimed at the breakaway regions, not total occupation. That’s not really a comparative though when you look at the actual calibre of some of Russia’s forces . some of the American divisions are world leaders in their craft , even discounting the marine Corps specialist units , the yanks have a fearsome war fighter capability compared to any one on the planet .
