Russia has never really seen the Middle East as a "sphere of influence ", although they they have allways wanted a Mediterranean base, have had influence in Egypt and have a big military presence in Syria, supporting the Assad regime.

That's what is on record, off the record they've had involvement in Sudan, Central African Republic, Libya, Mozambique, and most recently after military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso kicked the French forces out and welcomed Russians in. That's just Africa...

Yes, that's "soft power", much as the Chinese are also doing in Africa.

My instances were actual invasions and wars and the annexing of territory. ?

Cheers.

I don't follow you? Their involvements in the countries I listed are much the same as they were in your example of Syria, just less well known.

In fact there's speculation that the recent military coups had Russian involvement.

My point is, they are playing the same game the West is, but many seem to consider it dismissible when it's Russian in nature.

As I said; Russia is probably no better or worse than the west in getting involved in conflicts.

I was basically countering Francie's statement about the wests invasions of the Middle East, and pointing out Russia has done the same, but in less well known or reported places.

Kipling called it "The Great Game"; not much has changed since then.

Cheers.

FYI I'm not saying Russia invaded any of those countries, they've done plenty of that as Charts points out, but not in these instances as far as I know. But they are looking to gain influence and advantage anywhere they see opportunity to though. They use private military contractors to support the side Putin wants to win. Often these contractors are nothing more than serving spetsnaz who take their insignia off and wear a face mask. Similar to Western special forces operations.

I'm not even saying that's wrong, lol. But people need to know that Russia are not a benign defensive state. The moment the West takes their foot off the throttle, there will be a queue of equally nasty fuckers ready to capitalise. It's the nature of the world.

It is all about exploiting the natural resourcss of these countries and locking them into buying their vehicles, machinery and arnaments from them. It was the same with the Yanks in the anti-Commie years.  Russia have lost a massive chunk of their historical exports when the Iron Curtain came down.

Russia doesn't have as much a hold here as it does Germany and other European countries. Can now see why they don't want trouble with Russia as they rely on them for pretty much all there oil.

If Russia was to cut of its pipelines most of Europe is going back to the 1900's.

Great for carbon footprint though.
