tb25 4,627
Any others who just sink when they hit water? Did my first swimming lesson last Saturday and didn't do too badly. Booked another in for this Saturday .Good little confidence boost. Wish I did it years ago.was allways alittle jealous on a summers day watching the lads and kids messing about in the river. Wish I did it years ago.was allways alittle jealous on a summers day watching the lads and kids messing about in the river. I've spoken about this before. Yeah I have quite low buoyancy. I can swim but not well. I need to lift my head higher to breath, which drops my legs, which makes me have to kick harder to keep them up, which depletes my oxygen more, which means I have to breath more frequently etc etc. Totally unsustainable. I took lessons for a few months, which I f***ing loved, very humbling. I learnt what my problems were and what 'good' form feels like, but ultimately achieved f**k all and I sacked it off in the end as I just couldn't justify the time and expense for what I was achieving. Tbh though i enjoyed being 'tutored' so much I'd have carried on anyway if I hadn't anything better to do.
gnasher16 30,455
Good for you boss.....exactly the same as me id be sat around the pool on holidays and stuff jealous of folk diving in the pool doing a quick few lengths then returning to their lounger all refreshed.....being the bronzed adonis i am/was probably looked a bit of a fanny carefully walking down the steps and making it obvious im only willing to go where i can still stand up !.....in my case it wasnt buoyancy, lack of co ordination or any of that stuff i was just scared of going under the water, simple. You have to conquer these things though.....after years finally had some proper lessons then the wife pretty much taught me how to swim and go under water without thrashing around like a demented cat.....still wouldnt say im an accomplished swimmer i dont seem to get very far but actually enjoy being in water these days.....stick with it mate. jigsaw 11,897
59 next month, have a deep seethed fear of being in water anything above my waist....took 2 classes years ago,12 lessons each time, still no hope of me swimming,I left half way through the 2cd class, was in Spain a few years back, and never put a foot in the pool or sea, doing a few boat trips is as close as I'll ever get to being on the water lol
gamerooster 1,179
I'm a useless swimmer. My defense is man didn't conquer the world by swimming the oceans.....
Daniel cain 46,162
I think learning to swim as young as possible is a life skill well worth having...lost count of the amount of times I've seen kids and adults in trouble when on holidays and I've intervened...no fun having young kids around water, and needing eyes in your arse 2
Bosun11 537
Well done to anyone who takes the plunge in later life. Swimming is so important, and it covers many different fields, sport, recreation/leisure and as DC just said, a life skill....
Daniel cain 46,162
Just to add...anyone taking the plunge later on in life...big respect,my Mrs nearly drowned in her teens when in the sea in Italy, she was a decent swimmer but got caught in a rip,her dad got to her and they both got smashed into the rocks ..lucky to be rescued...she won't swim in the sea,but ok in the pool
kanny 20,724
I had to have my 100m badge before I was aloud to go fishing on my own, something I'm very grateful for now. Good luck

Borr 6,399
My kids swim twice a week, took a while to find a decent place , eventually found a private school that does lessons as part of its charitable obligation. Kids enjoy it , I love being in the water, and have always swam, started going twice a week after work lane swims , only breast stroke in slow lane . I found it awkward everyone has a different pace but I felt better for it and went a dozen times, the sauna made it worthwhile , I like swimming in the sea and lakes , I'm thinking about some lessons , just want to be more confident and efficient in my front crawl . Good on anyone learning stuff in adult life, it's harder, but you're normally more committed or invested in it..
South hams hunter 8,926
One of the most crucial things living on an island imo. Fair play to you lads for doing it.
Neal 1,873
I was the first person to leave my junior school without even a width certificate...my brother was the second the following year. I learnt by having lessons when I was twenty five but, as swimming pools are so expensive to visit I've hardly done any more in the intervening twenty eight years. I've always blamed the fact that my stepdad made my watch Jaws at a young age...I was even a bit scared to sit on a toilet for weeks in case my arse was bitten by a great white and I still feel nervous around water. Until I had my daughter I refused to stay at hotels with big child facilities especially on holiday times..!
