Not to clued up on sea, but surely lots of other stuff will feed off that lot?

One of the problems is the battering of the prime fish, Cod, Hake, haddock etc.. if people were more inclined to try other fish like whiting they would enjoy it as much as cod and you could spread the burden, so to speak, but with cod, haddock, hake particualry being a favourite to eat they continue to decline...

I'd rather eat gurnard than any of the above personally....

That was my point, badly made lol

There are thousands of 2lb - 4lb fish and they are the best eaters any way, keep a bag limit of say 2 or 3 but leave the big ones to breed, you take a 6lb bass and it is 15 years old... that's a prime fish.

My mate had a cracking fish off Branscombe a couple of years back, didn't weigh it but it was easy 8lb maybe more, it went home with him... fair play, no problem, but it did make me a bit gutted to be honest....

I know loads that do it, especially when caught as by catch which I find most decent bass are.

I think having a minimum encourages people to kill the bigger fish and having a bag limit means people will be unnecessarily greedy to spite 'the man' or chuck back a dead fish because they've caught a slightly better one.

The other issue (I may be wrong) but those are all 'winter' fish and slow growers, when they come down to our coast they're running the ultimate gauntlet from the likes of  Norway to the south, as they come down the channel.

Places like Norway still produce good cod regular and I know of several good fish so far this year. Gg from Barry has just caught the Welsh record haddock, so they are there when people put the hours in.

Whiting imo is much better than cod, haddock or hake but because alot of people only catch small ones they are classed as waste fish. Same as I don't really rate bass too eat.

The best cod I've caught are mid summer on the offshore wrecks, yes the inshore run is in the winter, but the cod are mid channel in the summer...

Agreed on bass, I like it but rather bream or even better Gurnard...

Agreed on whiting as well, used to fish for them on the mud banks off Exmouth years ago, old boy (long time gone now) would fish 4 hook paternoster.. greedy f****r, lol... would take home a sack full, was his favourite earing fish...
