I walked out with the Kelpie Dam of Jigsaw's original first cross,...I rated her and possibly should have taken her home with me. I liked her a lot and as stated, upon refection, I was silly not to take her .

Shortly afterwards, my pal swapped her for a Bull Cross .

The guy was a friend of my old pal Dave Cooper (the Kelpie Kid) and he pretty soon bred his own litter .

When this antipodean herder really gels with it's running dog counterpart, the resulting pups invariable make a great starting point to create, a future line of lurchers....

The quandary of where to go next, after that initial first hybridisation is where the real problem begins.

I must confess to trying, several options,...and it is only now that I have twigged onto my mistakes.

Sadly,...all a tad too late,.. to be of any real use...

Anyone ever heard or seen a sal/grey x kelpie? or even a sal x kelpie?
I recon they would be able to work day and night...

On the kelpies I've seen top workers no bigger than my parson for in the yards to big rangy dogs almost German Shepherd size that worked Brahma cattle in the hills. You mostly see the standard size being worked over here though around the 18kg mark.

Here's a dog I bought in 1984,at a game fair in Notts,from a Paul Taylor, saluki/greyhound X Collie/greyhound...fathom being his grand dam....an amazing dog for me,lamped 4 or more nights on the trot when the moon was down,the Collie was the strongest trait in him with the saluki stamina,he took a lot of rabbits every night,couldn't tire him out

Yeah, I lived on a property up the coast and the old neighbor had a dozen or so of these big lanky kelpies he'd bred for 50 years. He owned a couple of thousand acres of rainforest mountains that the cattle roamed over. He used to take at least six when mustering. He was a nice bloke and I remember one dog was 19 years old and still did a bit. He was a bit soft hearted with his dogs but they were good workers for him and he treated  them like kings, a good dog man.

I wonder why you do not see more sal/grey x collie/kelpie/acd crosses. Maybe @SheepChaser is on to something when he says they are mental.
