What's the crack with detectors, will you actually find more with a more expensive model, what's the cut off price between useless and good?

Garret ace 250. Get a second hand one for £150. I've been out with people who have spent a grand plus and my garret always held its own.

More expensive detectors can be 'better' but it's like guns, fishing rods or anything else, you got to put it in the right spot to succeed.

I've got a lazer hawkeye but I'm going to sell it and buy another garret.

What's the differences though, they either pick something up or they don't surley?

I get what you're saying though, it's the same with any tech isn't it.

I'm a b*****d for hating compromise, when I buy something that's not a premium model I have that uneasy feeling that I'm missing out on potential.

Depth and discrimination. Discrimination being the ability to cancel out metals you don't want to find. This sounds simple, you want to go deeper and miss rubbish. Most people want to cancel out the iron and look for silver and copper for instance. Also the better end models 'recover' quicker. If they pick up a big lump of iron you won't hear the tiny piece of silver next to it....a better model will separate those to sounds.

When you first start though do you really want to be working out complicated models, atunning you ears to dozens of different tones? If you just want to have a go buy a garret! They will find anything, they cut out the crap and if its there they will find it. Go to any metal detecting club or dig, you might have 50 plus people with different detectors. At the end of the day everyone will show there finds and the best finds are never linked to more expensive detectors.....the ones with good finds are those who spent more time on their own, slowly and methodically working a little patch, concentrating and putting the hours in. Not those stood chatting, looking at detectors and moaning there's nothing to be found.

I've found almost every single field has coins on it, I almost never 'blank'. The ability to find those coins depends on how much junk metal is covering the good stuff.

Years ago I was in pattaya,I wasn't there to drink or fornicate,so I had my trusty minelab packed, beach road had hundreds of prostitutes sitting around, I ignored them but a couple followed me down onto the sand ? anyway, after a while they drifted off, I could see a head torch sweeping back and forth,it was a Thai detector it's with a dirt cheap Chinese detector ? I did once bump into a Chinese metal detector it's in Hong Kong at repulse Bay when I was there at night also.

I have found 24k jewellery abroad ? I did bury something myself once before, non-metallic and in a small plastic barrel, detector proof, couldn't ping the location as my old GPS didn't work because of the thick canopy cover overhead (they used to be temperamental), and I never managed to recover it, couldn't pinpoint the precise spot a few years later, so one day someone might stumble on some treasure ?

You lead an amazing, mysterious life mate. Are you the next James Bond?
