Greb147 6,809
Can't say the hobby has ever really tickled my fancy but I suppose it can be very interesting. There's a lad from Carlisle who's in to it, I think he's more in to the money potential of a big fine rather than the history of it cos he's a proper hungry bastardo and we always have the crack with him whenever he brings the subject up which is inevitable. What eats him up is that he had land at Crosby Garret which happens to be the place where one of the biggest finds in the UK was unearthed, a copper Roman helmet which went for a few million pound. He's forever showing us his little finds over the weekends detecting, fascinating stuff. Any lads on here ever been in to it? Edited January 8, 2022 by Greb147

I should imagine the anticipation makes it quite exciting even if it doesn't float your boat. I can get why folk get in to it, you're delving in to the history of the UK whenever you make a find. A bit like hunting, there's do's and don'ts, not sure of the ins and outs of it all. I think the helmet at Crosby Garrett was only a foot deep, mad.
jukel123 7,957
Mate o mine is very knowledgeable. Discovered many Roman coins, including some valuable rare ones. Has a super sophisticated machine. I would love to to take it up but Iv e got so many different ties I haven't the time. One coin he discovered was awarded after 25 years service in the Roman army. It entitled the bearer to a plot of land and a pension in Rome. Often wonder how it came to be lost. Did he ever get his pension and land or did he miss out because he misplaced the coin? I should imagine Roman gear is worth the most, think he has found some Roman coins before as well as Norman, think the last find was some Queen Elizabeth I coins. Still, he is still finding regularly when out. I bet there's some good finds to be had on the Thames.

They're fairly common aren't they, still, a great piece of history. I've just messaged him now to send me some pics but he's the one who's caught Covid, he's in bed fcuked, says he'll do it tomorrow.
