Imagine trying to take-on this chap as he advanced toward you! Assyrian war hounds, there's a restaurant i visit now and again that's got mesopotamian battle scenes all around the walls, including mastiff type hounds. Quote Link to post

One of my half cousins staffs was one of the very few dogs he got along with, big white Irish staff called Homer, it was as soft as a brush. Edited January 12 by Goly Quote Link to post
Goly 536
He caught game every now and then when out hunting, can remember spotting a hare sat up in a ditch and told me dad to send the akita in while I wait at the other side with my lurcher on the slip, he sent him in but instead of a bolted hare it was a squealing hare, caught the c**t. Lol We used to sometimes lose him if he put up a squirrel up in the woods, he'd go bounding after em and wouldn't come back, had a great nack of finding em, his recall worse than a saluki. Imagine trying to take-on this chap as he advanced toward you! I have a book somewhere about the War Dog training schools in WW1 . Apparently lots of people donated their pets to the Army, either because of food shortages or through patriotism. A high percentage of these donated pets proved unsuitable during the six weeks of training and were unceremoniously shot . Some of the lucky ones were enlisted to guard military camps . Others went to the front with duties such as search and rescue , carrying medical and other kit , giving early warning of enemy movements , carrying messages or laying field phone lines from cable reels strapped to their backs . Interestingly it seems dogs captured from the enemy could be persuaded to change sides and work for their captors. Spaniels ,collies, lurchers and especially airdales were particularly suitable apparently. I remember the old man telling me that the German shepherd dogs they had in the RVC had come from people who could no longer handle that type of dog and the GSD was a very popular dog in the UK in the 50s. I know he and my mother took a family members GSD that got to much for them to Melton Mowbray a few years after he had done his National service. Quote Link to post
