Nitty Nora the bug explorer.

Recommended Posts

There's another thread about truant officers, but can anybody remember inspections from the bug nurse?

I can remember being the only kid in the class who had the offending creatures in my locks. They sent me home with a fine comb, some tar soap and some ointment. Took me ages to live it down!? Think I'm still traumatised.

All these experiences of basically poverty and deprivation were character forming, they made me what I am today........a sad, bitter, and twisted old c**t!?

Kids limping around because of verrucas, heads shaved because of nits, painted blue because of ring worm, legs in metal frames because of rickets, but, hey, spare athought for the poor kids of today w

I remember the NHS glasses and nitty Nora ,I hated that old law that you had to touch the lollipop man's Willie for luck or the cars would run you over ,happy days .

Derbac soap, and a small tooth metal comb for getting the nit eggs ? I must have caught them from sitting next to you at school juckel, scratching my head just remembering popping the nits between my finger nails ?

Yeah, the nit nurse !

we had a family in our street, load of kids, alcoholic dad, mum who couldn't cope.

After a visit by the nit nurse. all the kids had their heads shaved and painted with that purple stuff, poor buggers used to wear balaclavas to school, even the girls. One of them was called Florence, we all called her "Flo the crow", kids can be cruel at times.....

Cheers.

Talk about kids being  cruel, there was a lad in our class whose dad was a German POW who had married a local woman. Our school was right in the middle of direct hits from the Luftwaffe, so everywhere was flattened. We held this kid personally responsible and gave him stick from morning till night. When the Munich tragedy happened, we assumed it was a german bomb so he got double stick. We still have reunions but that lad never came to any. He never forgave us.Always felt guilty for that and so do the other lads.

Nitty norah the head explorer used gentian violet or crystal violet because I had ringworm and had it painted on, yes, I was one of those kids your mam told you not to sit next to at school ??

I remember at school in the 50's/60's, very much pre mass immigration, we had a lass who's dad was Jamaican and her mum was a local white lass, and a Polish lad. That was it, no other "foreigners".

Strangely, it was the Polish kid who got all the bullying, his life was made misery, thinking back. The half caste lass was never bullied, I guess she was looked on as something "exotic", something we had never seen before.

How times change.

Cheers.

I remember one of my brothers had ringworm and had that blue stuff on his face. Another of my brothers had a cock eye so he had specs with one lens plastered over. Yet another brother had f****n metal splints on his legs because he was bandy. My mam thought all this treatment was great. All the kids got cod liver oil ,orange juice and free milk in the fifties. My mam used to thank the lucky stars for the NHS.

Same here. Jamaican kids were exotic and not bullied. My mam used to touch their hair to feel the curliness. She thought they ate a lot of crusty bread which made their hair curl.
