A long time ago in World long forgotten I had a young JB bred bitch that surprisingly made 24” at the shoulder. I went for a mooch about one Saturday afternoon/ Evening with the pup just over a year old and the old dog who was 10. We circled round the farm so we could come up to the hotspot with the wind in our faces. We dodged through the wood because two men could be seen around the the barn that was being built in an adjacent field even then people didn’t like our way of life. The pup was off her lead but the old dog firmly on a slip because frankly he’s a dick. Just into the wood and a Cock Pheasant breaks cover with a familiar call with the young pup not far behind. Two peeps on the whistle and she’s back at heel with a good girl and a rub behind the ear. I make her sit and then release her with an ok. We make our way round to the Hare field. I lift her over the gate she starts hunting a quick whistle with a Hitler salute and she hits the decks. The old dog looks in disgust and leaps the gate from a standing start still on the lead. I climb over on the hinge side  hoping not to make noise. The Easterly was right in our face just perfect. I let the pup hunt but keep hold of the old dog. We walked slowly pup ahead of us not really hunting just being a pup. Then suddenly the pup got her nose down and the old dog nearly pulled my arm it’s socket. The young bitch followed a line then with a bang the Hare rose I was nearly pulled off my feet but I held the old dog. The pup was up and at the Hare turned it twice. They were heading down hill now and she made up ground on the Quarry with ease and it looked like curtains until old puss did a handbrake turn and the pup went sailing past and lost ground and the Hare disappeared. I ran up to were she lost the Hare and she was still nose down hunting. I gave the 2 peeps but she carried on I gave 2 more with a low call of COME. She came in to heel. Not the fairytale ending but I enjoyed it and the pup learned a lot.

Well that's all that will be left one day .but at least that's one thing that won't be taken from us memories  .reading your post got me thinking about a few youngesters using there nose in the field great post
